Reducing International aid.

You should look at the figures really, we will still be one of the highest contributors so I’m not so sure ashamed is the right response. Given the record levels of debt why should we borrow more money to give it away?

We were borrowing money when we (all parties) set the 0.7% figure.

Which is exactly why they know they can get away with it.

It just makes us look ever more insular to the world.
It would be difficult for the rest of the world to have that view when they give less than us, interestingly the smaller countries give a lot, Norway’s, Denmark etc,

Because it's morally right, we are the 5th 6th or 7th richest country on this planet depending which data is used.
I can see that argument but I can also see we are in an unprecedented situation where we cannot afford it or we will have to borrow more to afford it. In comparison to other countries we are head and shoulders above them in our foreign aid, indeed one of a very few countries hitting the 0.7 per cent target.

Looks like we are right around where you would expect us to be in that table. Whats the big deal

Ive noticed strong correlation between those with a stiffy for British Values and those wanting to reduce foreign aid, which I find odd. Surely as a former coloniser extraordinaire sewing seeds abroad is about as British as it gets

I've no idea what this country wants or where it is headed any more

Retreating entirely into our little island? pull up the drawbridge?

You do realise that it is 50p in every £100 spent.

He saved 20p how much do you put in your penny jar every week?
Yes I do realise that but the argument still doesn’t make sense to me when 100 percent of that money comes from further borrowing.

The money we spend in foreign aid comes back to us in other positive ways, its an investment in the future.

This government have chosen to make the most vulnerable in our society and wider world pick up the bill for Covid, while at the same time ensuring that the richest are protected and £billions given to their chums for failed PPE and T&T.

We are not scraping the barrel to find money for vanity projects like the "festival of Brexit" are we? Simply put, we can afford it if we wanted too.

I think being able to say that despite everything we are maintaining our commitment to foreign aid is a nice bit of PR for a much maligned little island and certainly something that i could stand behind and be proud of as a citizen of this nation

FatCat you keep going on about borrowing - Given that around 40% of all Govt debt is owed to the British Govt and the last rounds of Govt borrowing in the market have been at negative interest rates whats the problem?
