Reducing International aid.

Yes, let's sort out our own problems first because helping poor countries out elsewhere in the world isn't likely to have any benefit to this country. Say the people who complain that people come to this country to escape from difficulties in their own.

Now. In the midst of a lockdown they complain about. Caused by a global pandemic that originated, presumably in their massive overworked brains, in some slum adjacent to Covent Garden, rather than in a poor far corner of the world* where economic pressures mean mankind is encroaching on habitat of creatures with all sorts of potential crossover diseases and at the same time leading to some questionable farming practices. Not to mention climate change is an issue that needs a global approach.

I’m not sure I follow, where do you think it originated?

I don’t know of anyone that thinks it originated here( if by here you mean the UK)

My point entirely. Spending all of your money here has no impact on problems that come our way from abroad, be they economic migrants, asylum seekers, disease, environment, terrorism or climate change. Foreign aid can have long term benefits we just don't really appreciate. Foreign aid is a soft power investment, not a cost.

Total foreign aid budget 2019 = ~£15bn
Slicing 0.2% off = Estimated at ~£4bn per year.

Reason = We can't afford it with no date to reinstate it, loose estimate is roughly 4 years to be back to where we should have been pre Covid.

Extra funding for military = £16.5bn over 4 years.

We literally just cut foreign aid budget by the same amount as we have found to spend on war, when we apparently can't afford too.

No I agree with that you were just being a bit too cryptic for me earlier!

It is a political decision, no more.
They can say (to whoever will listen) we’d rather spend it on the needy in this country - and everyone bays with approval.

In fact - it won’t be spent on the needy but, by then, people won’t care.

And, btw, 0.7% was a manifesto commitment

I’m disappointed it’s not more. Sort poverty out in our own country first before we try and sort the rest of the worlds out.

UK81 you certainly come across as a selfish all about me type of person. You have posted a number of times about your fear of redundancy and it's implications for you and you also tell us about your 1/4 million pound nest egg and your numerous holidays abroad next year. (Good for you)

Some people in this world have nothing, not a roof over their head, not a meal to eat and no health care.

I was hoping if Covid taught us one thing is that we are all connected in one way or another and rely on each other, as well as being the right thing to do (in my opinion) it also makes us safer and a country the be respected.

Funny how tax rises are never mentioned these days, it's always ever cuts or borrowing, whilst I am still in work if we have to pay 1 or 2% more tax then I am more then happy for 0.7% of the extra tax to be spent in foreign aid.

Let's show some care, concern and compassion please for those who through no fault of their own, live in absolute poverty and who's daily existence is how to survive until the next day, it doesn't matter where in the world they live, these are our fellow humans.

The talk of referendums is a bit daft. If we had a referendum on capital punishment it would likely pass.

Cutting international aid is a retrograde step.

By that argument we should just do away with the treasury and print money as much as we want. Doesn’t really work does it!

It does work. That's exactly what we could do, especially after we leave the E. It's called quantitative easing. We did it after the bank collapse, so why not now.

Today we have saved £5 billion on foreign aid, on the same day that the national audit office identified that we spent £12.5 Billion on PPE that l;ast year would cost us £2.5 billion.

There’s limits to that though - you can’t just spend spend spen as it leads to problems further down the line!
