Redcar Hydrogen Community?

Has anyone in Redcar had a knock on the door from Northern Gas asking if they can do a service of your home ahead of the planned Redcar Hydrogen Community project?

Must admit I didn't know anything about it, but having looked into it, I'm not sure if we have any choice in the matter as if it goes ahead they will be cutting off natural gas in the area (in 2025, mind).

Although I can see the reasons behind it... I can't imagine many will be happy about this especially if they just forked out on a new oven, boiler etc as they say they will provide new 100% hydrogen installations.

Got it done a month ago.

Free boiler and oven if I'm still living here then, so I thought it was worth doing.
You get to keep your current appliances and sell them on if you want to.

They did break my current boiler's fan doing the tests, but thankfully came back out to fix it without any charge.

So they’ve already came and fitted the new appliances or do you mean just got the service done?

Think that’s my main concern to be honest getting it done so close to winter, don’t really want anything to go wrong or change.

How is this hydrogen generated? If it's from traditional sources then it is just as polluting as using methane. Also, is it safe? Has it been given an odour? Hydrogen can leak through joints and seals which have even the slightest defect.

They just test your boiler and gas appliances right now.

They won't be changing anything over until 2024/2025.

Really? No natural gas from 2025? My mam is in Redcar and after a stroke isn't in a position to run her home. Am I going to have to sort out changing her heating etc by 2025?

As far as I know, it's just a select area of Redcar, and it's only 2000 homes, your mam might not be in the area.

Apparently we got a letter about it a few months ago, but I never saw one!

From their website:

Northern Gas Networks is proposing to supply around 2,000 homes and businesses in parts of Redcar including the town centre, Warrenby, Coatham and an area of Kirkleatham with hydrogen from 2025.

This is absolute nonsense. Hydrogen for heating is insane, it will never get past these trials. I really hope no taxpayer cash is funding this.

Methane will be used to generate the Hydrogen and the carbon produced by that will be pumped and stored offshore. It will be odourised. Hydrogen can also leak through steel.

Phew thanks. Looks like it's missing her

All of the H2 developments are at least match funded by government (you and I) with some elements being fully funded.

In reality the Utility Companies take the pee and money is being spunked on all of the schemes.

Without H2 the big gas companies SGN, NGN, Cadent, NG, Centirca, British Gas etc won't have a business when the methane runs out. So while they're getting their R&D funded by us theyre still making huge profits, lashing out massive dividends and their foreign owners are reaping the massive rewards.

It's a win win win for them.

Just another example of the distribution of wealth...... upwards.

Will it though? It is just an excuse for O&G to keep on drilling really, isn't it?
Thats what they say. Not sure if the tech has been proven.
They don't really need an excuse.... O&G are all in bed with governments the world over.

All the carbon footprint targets and reduction promises are smoke and mirrors.

Meanwhile the world is dying, almost at the point of no return and our children's children will never forgive us.

We've all seen the sci-fi of a barren planet with no sunlight to grow anything..... it's not sci-fi, it's happening.

LET THEM EAT SOYLENT GREEN!

Using hydrogen is surely a lot cleaner for the environment than burning natural gas certainly from domestic properties. Natural gas releases a lot of carbon in the atmosphere.

I am not a scientist but I would guess hydrogen can be produced from water, while natural gas needs a carbon source.

Hydrogen can be produced green energy and from natural gas (non green often referred to blue hydrogen).

Methane and hydrogen are both dangerous.

All major energy companies to my knowledge operate for profit including the ones producing energy from renewable sources.

Which general area of Redcar?

Only by using large amounts of electricity. Where would that come from?
BP and other companies are planning green hydrogen plants on Teesside using wind farm generated electricity to separate the water. This has an advantage over other wind farms because they can be run 24 hrs a day regardless of electricity supply.

Carbon capture is also happening. Most of the petrochemical industry on Teesside and Humberside will be included and the carbon stored under a huge sandstone shelf in the North Sea.

Speaking to a a gas board worker during the last lockdown he said our gas supply contains a percentage of hydrogen it already.
