Recruitment

The recruitment this summer was completely bizarre.

Signed 2 strikers who don’t get a look in (1 of them being a proven championship goalscorer.)

Sell Tav, ok that’s understandable but to then let Payero go and ONLY sign Mowatt who looks dreadful so far is truly baffling.

I think Steffen, Clarke, Giles, Muniz & Daniels are all decent signings. But find it so strange that we haven’t really improved up to and in midfield when it was the obvious issue last season.

I think Ryan Giles was a good loan signing.
Liam Roberts seems like a canny acquisition
Rodrigo Muniz looks to be an upgrade on Andraz Sporar..

I’m not that sure about

Joe Lumley or Zack Steffen?
Nathan Wood or Matt Clarke?
Martin Payero or Alex Mowett?
Marcus Browne or Marcus Forss?
Josh Coburn or Matthew Hoppe?
Grant Hall or Darragh Lenihan?
having Massimo Luongo on a free to replace £12m Marcus Tavernier??

The recruitment has been shocking. Our midfield is the worst I’ve known it for some time. Crooks is doing his best impression of a cart horse. Seems to be worn out after 15 minutes of mild running. Howson has had it. And Mowatt wasn’t good enough for West Brom to keep hold of. Letting tav go made financial sense but not replacing him with any real quality is criminal. A long season ahead I fear.

It didn’t make financial sense if we couldn’t reinvest that money. We now look a side more likely to go down than up without Tav. Signing Mowatt as a replacement made zero sense, no doubt we will be covering his huge wages then have to sign another replacement next summer

We will also need to replace Munez, Giles and Steffan too. 4 key positions to replace so another full overhaul next sumner once again

I would agree with all of this barring Lenihan who again I feel would be an excellent CB pairing with Fry or clarke.

For me roberts looks the better of the 2 keepers more urgency and eagerness to stop goals, Steffen is very slow in everything he does.

As you have suggested the rest are much of the same if not lesser than there counterparts, some players Mowatt, clarke and lenihan I feel the formation doesnt bring out the best in them, Luongo was just a numbers game nothing more.

The problem is Forss and Hoppe where definately club signings and not manager, this shouldnt happen, the manager should give a blueprint of what hes looking for and the club shpuld Identify players, the manager should ulimately run the rule over them as to whether they fit the system he wants to play or have the attitude hes looking for IMO.

Hoppe seems to be doing well for the U21 few goals can only be good for his confidence should be given an opportunity, Forss needs minutes he should be playing in the U21's too!

Not at the time we did snd on their terms it wasn’t. We worsened ourselves to benefit Bournemouth, if he was to be sold it should have been on or around deadline day.
Selling Tav wasn't a problem. Not being able to find a single midfielder in world football for £10m to replace him is the failure. There are 100s of players that we could've signed that would be a huge upgrade on what we have. We could've signed a whole new championship midfield for less than £10m.

Signing nobody was just a failure on the part of the recruitment team.

Tav wanted out. He wanted to go, turned down a new contract.
Problem with keeping him until we found a replacement is if a. He gets injured or b. He plays with a nark on.
It's not a good situation and in an ideal world should have been sorted a lot earlier in the window. Certainly screwed us big time.
But not being able to get a decent replacement in......🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

I don’t understand club signings - to what end if the manager then doesn’t play them. It’s bizarre that money could have been spent on one decent player that wilder wanted. Instead we have two squabbling parties embarrassing the club and impacting the fans.

He’d already stayed an extra season an signed a new contract. How we haven’t identified ONE player in over a year to replace him. Last minute Mowett doesn’t cut it.

For whatever reason, we did not get the players Wilder wanted, in which case Wilder needs to adapt to get the best out of what we have.

Right now Wilder is compounding a problem with recruitment by being too loyal to his system that we don't have the players to play.

Steffen & Daniels are far better than Lumley.
Matt Clarke has won player of the season at his last 4 clubs.
Payero or Mowatt - I agree with you.
Forss scored goals for Brentford in the championship however its clearly not a Wilder signing.
Hoppe hasn't played so how can we comment on him.

I agree that we have made some strange signings. However, maybe its just that we are crap at improving players and not necessarily always the players fault. Who was the last player we signed that we actually improved?

Crooks?

Or Larsen could have turned out to be another £15m Britt, stinking the place out for years until he finally leaves on a free.

The very minimum is to start the season with a complete squad.. we needed that before the season started. But not to have that AFTER the window is crackers! Everything that has scuppered us in the past it seems we have went and done again! Let’s not forget all this was going off before the end of last season!
