Recommend me a comfortable, sturdy, but economical office chair

Herman Miller are supposed to be the best chairs you can buy. They are about £1,200 new but you can get refurbished or used for under £300. They have a 12 year warranty and are built to last so even a 2nd hand one should be great and that's usually the winner in the best value office chair questions I've seen online.

£500 for an office chair!
When I work from home I spend 8-9 hours a day sat in it. It's the same as getting a decent mattress in my eyes. You can get cheaper but it won't be as comfy or as long lasting.

It was under 500 when I bought it. And is more than capable of handling my 20+stone weight, which cheaper gaming chairs have struggled with.

I've recently picked up a refurbished Hermann Miller from this site - it's a real eye opener how much of a difference a decent chair can make to comfort when you're sat for a long time

I'm shocked it took someone so long to say Herman miller

You won't find many offices round the world using secret labs chairs, because they're cheap ***** (pleather/cloth on cold cured foam with cheap parts) with expensive price tags to cover all their licensing branding deals. They're also racing seats and I doubt people are going round sharp corners while wfh

Herman miller aren't cheap, you'll probably get a used aeron that has been refurbished for £300-£500, which seems wild for a refurbished chair but when they're new they come with a 12 year warranty and you'll probably still find them in use 20 years later.

I've seen secret labs chairs less than year old and they're falling apart, really don't see the appeal in them. If they were used as office chairs, workplace occupational health would be through the roof. They're made from extremely cheap parts.

Herman miller chairs aren't extremely comfortable. You could be forgiven for thinking you'd be paying a lot for a chair that you sit in and it takes all your worries away as it's so comfortable to sit in, but it doesn't work they way. They're designed to be sat in and support you properly, and allow you to do that day in, day out, for years on end.

it's not even something that looks great either, they are unassuming looking but once you know what they look like, you'll see them on tv all the time and in offices. You'll rarely see secretlabs except in gamers rooms and if you're going down that road you might as well buy something cheap from as the quality is about the same.

Aeron is the flagship product - they do cheaper ones of you don't want to spend as much

Essentially, as someone that has worked from home for 10 years now, you need something that is described as a task chair - and well reviewed in that role. Don't buy a gaming chair.

The refurb sites are good for getting these chairs a lot cheaper and they're usually reupholstered so look basically new

Just seen this - have a Herman Miller in my old work from home office - bought it in2018 and it is as good now as it ever was.
Cost me £275 but I reckon I could probably get half of that back for it now, though I wouldn't sell it. It is iconic and I'm sat on it now even though retired. So comfortable and adjustable, what the hell would I replace it with?

My wife always commented that the people in film / TV sat in the same chair as me...fame at last!

Those Herman Miller chairs are for offices and are mass produced with Chinese factory parts. Not necessarily anything wrong with that, but they cost a lot. You can obviously get them much cheaper because they were never worth their initial retail price.

It might be worth looking for a vintage Ercol dining chair if the height is suitable. They are really comfortable, much more than you'd expect. There's a variety of styles with some costing more than others.

In reality, people have been sitting on wooden chairs for thousands of years - so why change now?

I don't know why people bother with cars. Horses have been the best mode of transport for thousands of years so why change now?
