How much of the UK market do the French own? And who the f thought it was a good idea. C was probably wearing a blue dress.Because the state owned 85% of EDF Macron kept the energy price to an initial 4% rise.
Share dealing in EDF is suspended. The French government are about to pay €10 billion for the remaining
15%. “ To protect the future of our national energy supplies”

How embarrassing, to leave the EU and still end up handing over cash to the French government so they can use it to subsidise the bills of their citizens.
Some OG that - started a long way up the pitch as they say.
Blairs record in power from 97 to 2010 looks mighty impressive compared to this bunch of chancersYou can't trust Labour with the economy.
The big energy firms are financing the tory Party perhaps ?Yeah, and the big problem is as energy increases we have to pay for it and that keeps driving the figure up and up.
I can't see why they don't just cap the energy prices and that will in turn calm inflation. It seems so obvious - there must be a glaring reason why they aren't doing it?
And that is what is hitting the economy more than anything. If people are struggling to make ends meet they can't afford to spend in the shops etc.I was leaving it for someone else to pick up on it and comment, but look at the UK on the graph i added.
Second worst in Europe for effect on the poor, but look at the differential between the poor and rich. France, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, the poor and rich are affected almost the same, but here...?
It really does show the inequality and the poverty in the UK.
thats very true and also very condescending go figureUnfortunately the brexiteers tapped into people's xenophobia, that their problems were caused by the EU and Johnny foreigner in general. They never really addressed the economic issues and just screamed Project Fear (and they're still doing it).
It's widely accepted that deindustrialisation in the UK was a driver for a lot of the disaffection that played a part in the Brexit vote yet Economists for Brexit were openly declaring that Brexit would probably be the end of (what remains of) British industry. Go figure.
Utter balls. They were told how to vote by the Tory press that they continue to support.thats very true and also very condescending go figure
These poorer northern communities felt rightly, completely unsupported and abandoned by previous cons and labour governments with no hope. Brexit was the last throw of the dice, a protest for many who had lost it all and are completely disenfranchised from party politics and wider society. I say this as someone in favour of remaining, the wrong choice was made but sneering at people in poorer communities, saying you voted for this doesnt help anyone.
Let‘s not have any doubt about this, it was the Tories under Thatcher who deindustrialised the north and sold off the utilities.thats very true and also very condescending go figure

More Tory rubbish, I get sick of reading it, the free market trend was of Thatcher’s instigation. You’re asking who thought it was a good idea to allow EDF to get such a control in the UK? We’ll surely the answer is Labour
state-owned French company taking over the private London Electricity in November 1998. That first foray by EDF was followed in 2000 by its purchase of Cottam; in 2002 EDF added the old electricity boards in south-east and south-west England to its portfolio, and in 2008, with the purchase of British Energy, it bought most of Britain’s working nuclear power stations.
Labour were in power from 1997 until 2010
France has proved an adept lobbyist. Brussels has let the French protect EDF from competition at home, allowed EDF to borrow money at low government rates, and let it expand into the open arena of Britain.
Mandelsen was then at the department for trade and industry and had to resign at the time due to taking a loan on a Notting hill property
And now he’s back in Labour and I don’t see any talk from Labour about nationalising
It wasn't a publicly owned company in 1998. It's not going to be public again while we continue to pander to capitalists. And how is Labour different now with regards to energy to how it was on 1997 - 2010?
I get really tired of arguing with Tories these days because fed rubbish by the media they just refuse to wake up.And how is Labour different now with regards to energy to how it was on 1997 - 2010?
Nailed itUtter balls. They were told how to vote by the Tory press that they continue to support.
People from communities made poorer by successive Tory governments deserve to be sneered at for voting Tory, they're treacherous.
The regulator kept the prices down which were lower anyway as we were part of the single market. And how is Labour different now with regards to energy to how it was on 1997 - 2010?
I don't think Bozza really understood the risks when he 'stood up to Putin'.
The Ukraine situation was an opportunity to divert attention and get some 'Churchill like' done to restore his reputation.
He mistakenly thought that EU countries would take the brunt due to their over reliance on Rusky gas.
He thought the UK would be insulated from that pain.
He was wrong, massively wrong and he has f. the uk yet again.
Not sure how BoE could manage inflation when its driven by a dimwit PM who sheer incompetence leads to an economic catastrophe.
Bunter & co should stop blaming Putin, and really look at themselves and consider their lack of foresight that existed before they poked the bear.
They f'd up.
