Re-infected?

More Stories of people being re-infected, latest one several weeks after testing negative.

Remind me why we want herd immunity again....

Not sure I understand that. Someone who was negative is now positive?
or they were positive, got over it and were tested -ve then +ve...

Sorry for vagueness, yes Japanese National was on diamond princess tested positive. Was released after testing negative. 3 weeks later has been retested after showing symptoms again and has tested positive.

When you say testing negative, can you clarify or link to the article you read?
As finny said, does that mean they had it and got over it?

Saw your reply that was posted as I posted this.

1 re tested positive... how many worldwide have contracted it and then not re caught it?

The fact that one person has been reinfected is the important part of this Cooper as it relates directly to the possibility of herd immunity being a viable thing to pursue.
If we aren't even testing unless people are hospitalised then we have no way of knowing if any are being reinfected.

That’s a really important point, if we don’t who has been infected how do we know they have been re-infected

there’s multiple reports or people re-infecting

There's also reports in China that the virus isn't under control there at all despite the drastic measures they have taken. Unless it's official you can't pick and choose which bits of "reports" you see fit to suit your argument

Although most people are immune for life from such diseases as Mumps and Chicken Pox there are occasions it can happen twice.

If you have built up no immunity to it and it's rife like it is now I would expect people quickly re catching it again.

What it your reasoning for people being able to catch it again so soon?

I think Cooper’s problem on this subject is that of cognitive dissonance and any evidence that doesn’t tally with his belief that herd immunity will work is disregarded as either political propaganda or somehow anomalous to the process, I think at times there’s a bit of persecution because he holds ideas that stray from many posters on here so he goes on the defensive and it becomes more ad hominem than the issue in hand.

I’m of the opinion that stemming and trying to reduce infection and spread as soon as possible is likely to be the best course of defence, a lot of governments have also taken that view, reinfection and the post lockdown spike are going to occur at some point so acting now to restrict the epidemic makes more sense than letting more people become infected and trying to manage something in the hope that initial infection will produce long term immunity.

Its not my steadfast belief it will work, its the approach that medical experts advising our government using science have stated to use and they know a lot more than me and the general public. Yes you will find other scientists stating they should do it another way. My issue regards to political propaganda is paper like the guardian writing headlines like "top scientist scathing attack on government approach" and he's a member of the labour party. 200 "scientists signing a paper having a go and it turns out there was no disease control experts on the list and PHD students. People use that as a stick to beat the government with but I can guarantee if the government was taking its advice from PHD students people would be up in arms.

There is elements of the press and some posters who are using this as a political point scoring exercise when it is anything but. I am not following this advise because its a conservative government. I am following it because its what the medical experts in our country believe is the correct way to approach it

Political point scoring? Why? if they believe the govt is wrong it doesn't mean they are point scoring. If you can be re-infected it puts our govt's herd immunity policy in the bin really. Or maybe they were trying to fight it on the cheap and more concerned with GDP?

I don't understand this herd immunity bull. I am a 66 year old with lifelong asthma and high blood pressure. So say I self isolate for the next few months until we get over the peak and we get our 60% herd. Surely when all those coming out of hiding will have a bigger chance of catching it. All very confusing. Surely the thing to do would be to limit the spread now.

The point is they want to isolate the vulnerable like yourself so people like me (hopefully im fit enough) take the brunt of this and build up immunity therefore you will not be able to catch it from people like myself who will possibly only carry mild symptoms but could be lethal to you.

If you lock us all down then no one takes the brunt of it. If it returns you will then be susceptible to the disease and to people carrying it as no one will have built up any immunity and it will spread like wildfire again

I think in general most people are beyond party politics with regard to this outbreak and my concern is that we are out of step with other countries on the basis that we can’t be reinfected, science is a world wide thing and it seems the conclusion our scientists are making is at odds with perceived wisdom.
