Raducanu!!!

I think it does Raducanu a bit of a disservice though. She really attacks the opponents serve and doesnt let them play their best game. Navratilova saying today she thinks she is the best returner she has seen since Serena says a lot. On top of that she has been ruthless when she gets set/match points. It's been a joy to watch.

Aye, I think so. She's blitzed everyone she's played, all ranked far higher. So seems unlikely they've all had an "off day" against her.

Part of it is a mental coping strategy, part of it just human nature to look for excuses. Easier to say you weren't at your best than accept your opponent is that much better than you.

I think the fact Sakkari mentioned more than once about Radacanu "playing without fear" suggests she knows there was a bit more to it.

The challenge for Raducanu is showing that she wants this to be her norm, is as dedicated after playing to this level as she was to get to this level. Also the ability to bounce back from adverse losses and not lose her confidence. Finally of course mentally deal with the inevitable injuries she will pick up, tennis is brutal on the joints.

If she can handle all that, she's got a chance of a hell of a career

True to say at the moment she has nothing to lose. But even so would be easy to let nerves get the better of you, particularly at the US open on Arthur Ashe which is probably as intense an atmosphere as you get in tennis.

What's really impressive is she's not so much zoning it out as embracing it. Like a duck to water playing on that stage so far. You never know how someone is really feeling but all the evidence suggests she's loving it and not feeling much pressure at all. That composure at 18 is incredible.

That mindset of living in the moment is hard to achieve but she seems to have it nailed. Think it's only going to be injuries that can stop her now. Hopefully she's has more luck than Laura Robson had.

that’s it. You don’t get from the qualifiers all the way to the final just by chance that everybody had an off day. Especially when in the previous grand slam you were also over achieving in terms of expectation too. That’s a hell of a stretch of good luck that all your opponents weren’t at the races, 2 tournaments in a row. This is world class tennis, you don’t keep progressing by being fortunate.

The reality is that she’s just an excellent player, but she just has a ranking that is way lower than her ability because she’s only really arrived on the scene at that level.

I guess her well ranked opponents right now are looking at her ranking, age and the fact she had to come through the qualifiers and thinking they shouldn’t be losing, but I think time will show that they lost to someone very good and it’s not a stroke of luck/off night.

Aye. I think if all the events below top level hadn't been suspended/cancelled due to covid her ranking would be much higher anyway. She essentially had 18 months off the tour, where she's probably developed a lot. I doubt she'd be such a "surprise package" in normal circumstances.

I opened this thread thinking I'd be reading good things about a new upcoming British tennis player (who we hope can bring home some trophies and good times), and yet the majority of this thread is arguing over her citizenship.

I don't know why I was surprised.
Agreed, it is embarrassing how things get derailed on here, why not just celebrate this young girls amazing achievement in her own right and also as a British tennis star.

Yes watching in the morning here in NZ. One of the most eagerly anticipated tennis finals in years here. Big build up on our news channels even though the only connection of sorts is that Fernandez plays with a Kiwi in the doubles.

Good luck to ER.

1st set in the bag.
Sadly I'll have to watch the highlights during my break as I'm just about to start work.

Great match so far. Emma should have went three up now looks a bit tired for me.
Tennis is an interesting sport though when it’s this competitive, being able to see the shifts in momentum. Same as a good boxing match. It’s always fascinating to watch I think.

Really had to dig and tough out that first set. Some real mental battle going on between these two and it shows real strength of character to win that first set.

She now has to go out like its 0-0 still

Been a great first set and it's sad there has to ne a loser on the night. At the risk of throwing clichés around though it looks like womes tennis is the winner tonight.

Two girls with character, grit, determination and talent still at the start of their careers which look to be very, very promising.
