Qatar World Cup - is it time to cancel?

There have been numerous human rights issues surrounding this World Cup, but is now the time to cancel it?

Taliban leaders have previously sheltered in Qatar and are now returning to over see the running of Afghanistan. We all know that there will be reprisals and more lives lost. Yet we are willing to go and celebrate one of the world’s greatest sporting events with the country that harboured these people.

I personally feel that FIFA should think again on holding this event in Qatar.

The time to cancel was the day after they were awarded, failing that it was time to cancel it when it was found that they were only awarded it due to bribery and corruption.

Not a chance they'll cancel it now.
Boycotts could still happen though.

If enough football authorities refuse to attend, then they will need to think again.

There is not much that the ordinary football fan can do.
It is up to the sponsors who support this circus. As far as I am aware, Sony is the only one to pull the plug on FIFA.

It's strange how these big brands are Virtue Signalling when it suits them

CORRUPTION

I will 100% guarentee I will not be watching any of the action, fans, players, officials, footballing bodies all have a duty to play, simply refuse to play, take part
Highly commendable statement of intent. And I 100% agree. However we should do more than merely turn off. We should be pressurising the players and management to think carefully about taking part. As fans we can make our feelings known to them. I know we shouldn’t have to but players, coaches, management blinded by cash and glory need reminding of moral obligations.

and sponsors. Things would change if their profits were at risk.

Yes but you will be p1ssing in the wind with Qatar Airways, An American Multinational mammoth drinks company and a South Korean Car Manufacturer sadly.
true. Sony pulled the plug and were simply replaced with Hisense I believe. You are right though, players need to take a stance - as does the likes of Gareth. It's fine protesting some things but they must be aware of the deaths and slave labour out there!

It will go ahead, the teams will turn up, the players will play and we will all watch it.

FIFA and UEFA have been quite canny commercially in expanding their advertiser base geographically over the last twenty years so that they are from all over the world. If they lose one, then politically someone else will step in and replace them.

I really hope that one of the big guns boycotts it sadly it won’t be us but Germany have been making noises as their players are no happy and so too have Norway as what fifa make of a World Cup with out the golden one halland missing out.
