Qatar knocked out

Probably posted about in threads last night, but I thought it deserved its own.

Qatar have become the first ever World Cup host to be knocked out after only 2 games, and unless they surprisingly beat the Netherlands, they're going to be the first host to fail to win a game.

It's also funny that they're the first team knocked out.

Couldn't happen to a nicer country
😊.
Can't help thinking Russia & North Korea would be nicer.

The locals form a small part of the total population, so if it is full of misogynists, a lot of them are expats too. Everything else though I agree with.

I worked there for 3 years, and there are a lot of decent people who just want to live their lives, don't believe in the governments rules for suppression and the laws, but its their home, and fighting for change is done in small steps from within. Not from a group of westerners in rainbow colours shouting from the rooftops.

John Barnes said something I agreed with which was, you are going there? Their culture is different, so respect it. Its not F***ing rocket science, is it? If you don't agree with it, don't go.

I'm not defending Qatar here, just offering a different point of view.
if your countries "culture" involves suppression of human rights or discrimination against minority groups then its not really worthy of "respect" is it? Its not like they're just asking people to wear white or shake hands left handed is it?

As for "don't go". How about dont bid (and pay bribes for) for the largest international sporting event on the planet if you cant welcome everyone to it, regardless of their sexuality. And don't give assurances then back down on them.

I'm all for respecting other countries culture. If it was just about banning alcohol, then fair enough. But using "culture" to gloss over or suggest human rights issues should just be ignored is a pathetic argument.

They've invited the attention of the world. They've paid a lot of money to get it. Funny they're now complaining that everyone is erm paying attention to them. Wonder if they regret it yet.

Only 15% of the population in Qatari rest are expats..
States ran by dictators, kings / queens or where religion is the rule of law tend to be oppressive..
Rule of law & democratic principles have much to be admired, despite the flaws..

I'd like to see the Dutch hit a net full.. a good training session for their squad..

I'd argue thats the governments position, its not respective of everybody. Much like how our governments position on immigrants being sent to Rwanda isn't shared by every citizen.

You're asking a lot for people to inward reflect and say, hey I'm a bit of a shithead, I better not bid on this. The best we can do, is ordinary citizens, is boycott the event they've paid so much money for. Having people not attend something you spent $220bn on, is not a great look on the world stage.

I never made that argument.

Think they hoped they could contain it, but with whats happening in the rest of the world, people are starting to take more notice of this type of behaviour. Ultimately, it will be uncomfortable for them for a while, but as usual, people will forget and move onto the next thing and the Qatar government will keep doing what the Qatar government does.

I did laugh when I read though that QIA said they may pull out of London due to the focus on human rights abuses. They said' we can invest in other parts of the UK', as if they think the news in London doesn't get into the provinces.

Fair enough. Think we're broadly on the same page to be fair.
