Is the word on the street
I suppose, along with restaurants - one of the ‘norms’ where social distancing is in the ‘really hard to do box’

“Word on the street” is a euphemism for pure speculation. We haven’t a clue about when but I wouldn’t at all be surprised if we get no summer pub openings. And in many cases a lot of pubs won’t ever reopen sadly. I know one local where landlord has already left the business.

Go to Austria for a holiday. Probably be opening up quite soon with Denmark and Norway to follow.

One of the pubs where I live has announced it won't be reopening.

It was a tough industry at the best of times so, sadly, there will be casualties.
The discussion ref potential opening for pubs was on a Defra led conference call yesterday. That was their latest view of things.

They’ll never be an announcement to say everything closed to September. In my options things will extended 2 to 3 weeks at a time as we survey and adapt to the virus

what was the actual statement, was it worst case scenario?

Really? Surprised none of the press have picked up on a bold comment like that from a DEFRA conference. They could be right but I tend to agree with GazC that they would never officially say something like that and prefer periodic review.

As a non-drinker it is easy for me to say, but would the move to more of a cafe culture be a bad thing?
People sat at tables enjoying a drink and food, being brought drinks and food by an army of waiters etc might actually be a better business model and also reduce the incidences of binge drinking.
Interesting point. My London work pub has had table service for drinks for some time. It is a Fullers thing in the City. Save the frustration of queuing at the bar.

It would also be a complete culture change for almost the entire nation. Think back to Hogarth's Gin Lane back in the 1750's, and probably before, and you'll realize it'll take more than a couple of months closure of pubs to change the country's drinking habits.

Fullers have suspended all rents whilst the crisis is on. Whichever ones are open, and there is one under my apartment! I'll be visiting there when this is over

I certainly won't be going in a Wetherspoons again after the horrific way their owner is acting now. I do hope people remember the treacherous companies when this is over. I suspect not though.

Also I agree a lot of pubs just won't reopen. There is a pub near me, opened not so long ago, called the steam packet. It's going to be shut for good. Along with 2 of it's sister pubs which I both frequent.

As an aside, I used to go to "gin school" in a pub in Chiswick on a Monday night. The pub was about 50metres from the statue of Hogarth. I did think it was inappropriate to hold a gin school there!

The food. Industry have regular conf calls with Defra. It was discussed as their latest thinking. No minutes, no statement. Important in the context of giving food retailers best info on forecasting.
I prob share your view that they will extend every 2/3 weeks.

I presume that is One over the Ait?

I know the Steam Packet near Kew Bridge? That’s sad.
Yes to both!

Apparently the Steam Packet is owned by "food and fuel" which is a Sub company of Chiquitos. Along with the really nice Duke in Richmond and Roebuck in Chiswick. They won't be reopening any of them. Sad times really, mind you Chiquitos were struggling before all this.
