Premier league proposes reducing number of clubs 20 to 18 and scrapping the league cup

But wouldn't it get boring playing the same teams and with little threat of relegation. Some of those relegation six pointers are the amongst the best games you will see. Giving three teams the chance of competing with and beating the big boys. Again, I give you Leicester who were in the third tier and won the Prem after just about surviving the season before.
American-owned clubs after the American way of sport. Says it all.

Purely opportunistic from the so called big six. It's right that the PL billions should be shared with the EFL but it stinks that they're attempting to do away with relegation and limit decision making to a handful of clubs.

Fukk em. Let them form a European super league. Which is what they really want. They’ll be a collection of exhibition teams like the Harlem globe trotters or some such. It’ll become nearly as boring as the so called champions league is now! Football in this country has never been the same since sky tv got involved.

I think it would be global rather than European , it’s an opportunity for America to step in if things get a majour reshuffle.
Could it be an opportunity for the highest ranking club in each countries league to potentially get bought to the highest bidder with a view of buying a place in the “ world super league “ ?
I’m still half asleep so I maybe eating carried away with that post , I haven’t read the whole proposal yet 😆

I dunno. It's all about stopping the pendulum from swinging back isn't it? Southampton and West Ham are the clubs named with most to gain beyond revenue streams - they've flirted with relegation in the last few years. It just happens to be them at the moment who can guarantee (almost) no relegation, lucrative games against the big six and complete consolidation of their position. I would think it'd be extraordinarily tempting for any club invited to sit at the table with the b***ds.

Yes for owners not for fans.

I'd rather experience a few more promotions and relegations in my lifetime than an eternity of drubbings and finishing 16th every season. Even for fans of Southampton where is the joy in that?

Now if they were bringing in an NFL style league with salary caps and something resembling a draft I could see the attraction of that for the teams you've mentioned.

In the NFL everyone is on a level playing field and most teams get their turn to win something. There's no way the big 6 allow that either though.

With us being locked out of the Riverside I’ve started watching the local non league clubs, I was at Guisborough Town the other night and Marske United yesterday and I’m thoroughly enjoying it.

If the likes of Liverpool and Man U think they are the be all and end all of football in this country and try to destroy the league pyramid structure in this country then it will come back to bite them.

I think the premier league is in big trouble, it has been ruined by money, it is becoming a poorer competition by the year and a lot of the matches even those involving the big teams are nondescript. The money has become far more important than the football. It is an unsustainable approach.

When I lived in Aberdeen I went to watch Cove Rangers in the Highland League - thoroughly enjoyable, Can see myself going to non-league when I come home.

The champions league/cup should be the champions from each UEFA country. The cup winners of each country should play a cup winners cup. No need for anything else.

This is pure greed from the rich who will only get richer, whilst the rest will eventually disappear out of existence.
Yep abandon the obscene CL farce, limit it to league & cup winners, if the same team has won the league etc then the runners up & so on
That'll reduce the number of games these so called i'm more important than you clubs plays, more focus on nthe FAC & League cup comps

I wouldnt watch any CL football if it was played in the back garden, everything thats wrong in football

Thats why I love to see the likes of Burnleys, Brightons in the greed is good league & long may they continue

Thing is Holgate, it's still HUGE throughout the world, especially South East Asia. People pay the money to watch and that's all the Sky network and the Premier League are interested in.
Yes I know you are right but in the long term in my view it is unsustainable.

The problem with foreign audiences is they will have no intrinsic loyalty to our league or clubs, if another league or even their own leagues start to offer a better competition they will simply drop the premier league.

Which might make some say that the European League is the natural progression, but I would say that only a handful of the champions league matches are worth watching each season and it is now dominated by just a few clubs.

Yeah, but if you're (say) Lamar Jackson, you can't go and play for the London Monarchs in the European American Football league for more money than Baltimore are offering. There's in reality only one NFL and it's awash with money. As soon as any salary cap came in in football there'd be a (rogue?) association who'd pay more. Why play in England with its 100k a week salary cap, when Barcelona will pay you 200k? It happened in the early fifties when wages were capped - Colombia's league seceded from FIFA and started offering unheard of money to stars like Di Stefano because they didn't have to follow the rules. The only thing that will cap salaries is an economic downturn (!) which will simply mean that clubs can't pay out as much money. But I don't understand the economics of football, where you can apparently lose money every second yet pay idiots like Rudy Gestede and his agent £30k a week.

Realistically, it has to happen. The only league that is sustainable is the Prem League, all the others lose money hand over fist even in normal times, let alone pandemic times.

Either the football league clubs agree (although they might be able to negotiate a bit better deal) or many of them go to the wall. The ones that survive will be because they have owners with more money than sense, like Steve Gibson.

Perhaps this will act as a wake up call to lower league players that they can't continue to be paid fortunes, just £50k per year at most. If they can't survive on that then get a part time job.

Maybe we'll see amateurs playing in the football leagues again.

It's time to realise things can't go on as they were, this offers at least some chance of survival for lower league teams.

I wish it were the case, honestly but it shows no signs of weakening. You only have to be in anywhere in Beijing or Shang Hai on a match day and the audiences to watch games are eye watering. Same with cities in Indian, Thailand, Japan, etc etc. The figures are simply huge.

I'd love the cycle to end and come a crashing and burning down but I don't see it happening any time soon. More's the pity.

I think the clubs in the Premier league know that the big income is from TV revenue, especially the Asian Market.

Do they care about the traditional fans becoming sick of it?

Give it 20 years and you'll have a new breed of football fan with people choosing their team rather than it being something passed down through generations and through local ties.

You look at how sky have pushed the NFL in this country, you see British fans with no ties to American cities having their favourite teams.

The Jacksonville Jaguars didn't exist when the Premier league was formed now they have 50 thousand members of their UK fan club. It just shows how quickly you can create new teams, new versions of a league and how quickly you can create a fanbase.

With Sky pushing the agenda the young kids will have no interest in a second rate league that you can't get promoted out of.

I'm not saying that an NFL style salary cap is realistic in this country, i was just trying to make the point that clubs like Southampton and West Ham will never be anything other than whipping boys in a Premier league where the big clubs pull all the strings.

If we were in that position and get mullered every week and finishing 12th-18th every year I think fans would eventually get sick of it.
