Premier league proposes reducing number of clubs 20 to 18 and scrapping the league cup

Purely opportunistic from the so called big six. It's right that the PL billions should be shared with the EFL but it stinks that they're attempting to do away with relegation and limit decision making to a handful of clubs.

Are they attempting to do away with relegation? Or are you just making things up to suit your dislike of the Prem League?

I wish it were the case, honestly but it shows no signs of weakening. You only have to be in anywhere in Beijing or Shang Hai on a match day and the audiences to watch games are eye watering. Same with cities in Indian, Thailand, Japan, etc etc. The figures are simply huge.

I'd love the cycle to end and come a crashing and burning down but I don't see it happening any time soon. More's the pity.
We will see, I’ve seen our football go through many cycles in my lifetime, from boom in the 1960’s on the back of the World Cup win, to the rise of superpowers like Leeds and Liverpool in the 1970’s, the dark days of hooligans and deaths at matches and low crowds in the 1980’s, the renaissance after the Taylor Report with bigger crowds due to much better and safer facilities, the rise of the Sky clubs in the 2000’s and more recently the rise of the money clubs, foreign ownership and, in my opinion, a dip in the quality of the football on offer.

However, set against the decline in the football in the premier league I think the championship and the lower leagues were, pre COVID, as strong and well supported as I can remember.

Things change all the time, let’s see how things are in a few years, you may be surprised.

Surprised?! I would be staggered.

Read the post the third team bottom side in the prem is to play off against the three champ play off side so that’s potentially now only 2 guaranteed relegation/promotion slots.

You don’t think they’ll stop there do you ?

Everybody hails Leicester, would that be the same leicester that is part of this south East Asian money and influence.

Controversially, Leicester posted a loss of £20.4m during their promotion winning campaign – more than any Premier League club except Fulham or Manchester City lost that same season and apparently well in excess of the maximum £8m loss as determined by the Football League's financial fair play rules.

Again typical

I can’t quite get my head around how quickly something that was the most popular sport in the world is being needlessly changed. VAR has started the process of making it less enjoyable and this proposal will be another nail in the coffin of English football for me. Hope it doesn’t happen. F***ing Liverpool urgh.

Yes, I do think it will stick at whatever they decide. Realistically there are at least 8 teams that won't ever be relegated. They won't be bothered too much about how many teams are relegated. By relegating two or three you keep things a bit fresher. It's not valid to compare US leagues with English football, there are 32 NFL teams and 30 MLB teams, up from 16 and 24 in 1970. New teams are created, not promoted.

The key is the change in the voting rights.
How long do you think "the big six" are going to be happy giving 25% of income to the football league? How long will they be happy only charging £20.
This is Caesar crossing the Rubicon. Only it's a bunch of fat American ***** rather than old Julius.

Exactly it’s animal farm -

we are equal...

What I fins astonishing is that Rick Parry has endorsed this proposal, seemingly without canvassing views from the EFL membership.

I would have thought he was there to represent the clubs within the EFL, not peddle his own personal views?

You find it astonishing that life long Liverpool fan and ex Liverpool chief executive Rick parry - agrees with a proposal designed by Liverpool to make Liverpool better

Oh right, so we should not be happy with Leicester's win?! I'm talking about a team with blokes like Albrighton, Okazaki, Simpson, Huth; no flash harrys, who formed an incredible bond, played good football, beat the trillionaires on their own patches and won a title against all the odds. We should be applauding them not lumping them in with the others.

I'm sure Steve Gibson has a view on Parry's support for this, I wonder how many other EFL clubs will feel the same.
