Premier and Championship Clubs Can Trial Safe Standing

We can't afford £500k to trial safe standing but can lose £25m on players over five years (see roofie's thread), but ironic for a community club, playing the people's game!

It is probably up to the fans to say it should be a priority

Middlesbrough aren’t a community club. You just need to look at the ticket pricing structure to see that.

Don’t know, guess you’d pay for a specific seat space - but in reality, yeah, it would work exactly like that surely.
I can imagine some people being narked if you have to pay for a specific space and say book 4 spaces together but then turn up and find 3 people already stood there.

If it's a free for all what stops people overcrowding in one space?

This happens in the seats at away games, to be fair.

Read the details - part of licence for pilot says it has to be one person per rail seat. It is a seat you buy, you choose to lift it up or down. It is not allowed to be locked up or down in trial.
Biggest problem is that clubs have to opt in by start of October. Will be too quick for many to commit.

So it takes away the option of people just meeting up and standing together on the day? Any groups wanting to stand together would have to pre buy in advance?

That would be hard to arrange I imagine, especially for large groups and even more difficult to control.

You mean like sitting in a stadium now? They are called rail seats. It is the same as sitting just giving people a chance to stand up and with a rail in front and behind you cannot possibly be pushed or push anyone else.
Here are Spurs rail seats. State of the art stadium with state of the art rail seats.

That's the only way it could be controlled though, they're not going to let people just go wherever they want. The set-up means it's not just an open terrace like it used to be, on a match that was sold out you'd be wandering up and down stairs and in and out of blocks looking for a spare spot if a seat wasn't asigned.

Here are Wolves rail seats. Do you see? Just like your Riverside seat but with a rail in front and so behind.

Shrewsbury installed them to improve atmosphere at a new ground. Same principle as to why away fans always stand. In the minority away fans want to make their voices heard.
At Celtic Park it improved atmosphere after being installed and proved so popular that the initial 3000 area was oversubscribed for season tickets and so the area was extended.
But areas of rail seating for home and away fans will mean that those wanting to sit or having to sit will get a better deal. Away from home it often means disabled and non standing fans having to go to the front, not the best view, especially if you are seated. The new pilot says that rail seats must not block the view of non standing fans. I would argue that rail seats might open up opportunities for non standing fans to come to football games.

I know of the seats, I know what they look like, how they work and I'm in favour of standing for those that want to.

I'm on about the logistics of how people group together.

How do 40 RF fans for example who want to stand together do so? I'd hazard a guess in the current seats a good chunk of people do not sit in the seat they are allocated to and just group together. That isn't as easy to do with this set up.
