Portuguese penalty against Uruguay

It’s not a matter of fact though, despite how they might use technology to make it look as if it is. It’s an approximation.

The cameras are not at a perfect 90 degree angle to the last defender, so there’s a need to approximate the line across the pitch based on the (approximated) position of the last defender. The refresh rate of the video means you have to approximate the precise moment when the ball was played.

The position of the attacker and last defender are determined manually by someone dragging a cursor the the point where they think the lines should be drawn (i.e. an approximation). Similarly, as football is a dynamic sport played in 3D but VAR operates in 2D, it’s an approximation as to where a player’s t-shirt line is in relation to, say, another player’s knee.

FIFA can use all the fancy graphics they like but, taken together, I reckon the margin of error could be a few centimetres. Therefore, similar with other on field decisions, VAR shouldn’t really be used to overrule an offside decision unless there is a clear and obvious error.
You are forgetting about the major change which is that linesmen no longer flag unless they are certain. They allow play to continue so more goals are scored, some of them get disallowed. The pre-VAR system had linesmen flagging for offside and done if then were incorrectly disallowed. The new system means every legitimate goal is allowed and the illegitimate ones are disallowed which is better than the old system where illegitimate goals regularly were allowed and legitimate ones were ruled out.

It's not perfect but it's close and at least there is a consistent process which means it is fair. In time the speed will increase dramatically as well because it will all be done by AI. They've adjusted the margin for error. If you were paying attention you'd notice there have been far fewer goals disallowed for very marginal offsides this season compared to the 1st season.

There should be no complaints about offsides really. It's not subjective so a player is either on or off side and there is a consistent process.

The subjective decisions are the problem and mostly they are just highlighting that referees are dreadful at their job. They always were dreadful but now they have no excuses for being dreadful.

That penalty has cost Uruguay a place in the next round - shocking that ridiculous decisions like that - after watching multiple replays of it too - change the teams qualifying
