Portable BBQs

I'm toying with the purchase of one of these for the summer (yes I have a proper charcoal BBQ in the garden) but this would be useful to take on days out and such. Has anyone got one because the options are a touch baffling!

Couple of questions for the hivemind

1. Are there other brands that might be better/cheaper?
2. What is the optimal config to go for (high pressure/low pressure/useful accessories)?

Thanks (in the expectation of many useful replies...)

Got one of these for camping. Small gas bottle and removable connector hose. Really easy to use and easy to clean. Ideal for home when it’s just me and the wife and I don’t want to get the big charcoal one out.

I’ve got a cadac in my camper van. If you’re going to use a screw on gas canister you’ll need the high pressure (hp) but if you’re using it via a propane cylinder (as I do) then you need the LP as the gas will be fed through a regulator. i use mine most days when I’m away, ideal for BBQ’s but you can also use the pan to cook spag bol, chicken curry etc. I’m no Egon Ronay but have a look at Cadac recipes on Facebook for some good tips.

I also got the R907 gas bottle and the detachable hose connector. Saves you unscrewing the regulator every time you want to move the BBQ and bottle as it just comes away from the BBQ end and also has a auto cutoff in case you forget to turn the regulator off.

I've got a Safari Chef after having a Carri Chef. The Safari is just big enough for 2 people. I used the Carri when my kids came with us. Better for 4 people.

Not sure if you're interested in charcoal but Tesco near me were selling portable charcoal BBQs on clearance yesterday. Think they were £10.

Had one of these for around 10 years, take it camping, festivals etc, also stick some logs on for camp fire, it's raised off the ground so doesn't burn the grass.
Probably get one cheaper if you shop around.
Best buy I ever made

I’ve tried a few but if I’m honest I still prefer the old tried and trusted wood burning smoker as it’s less hassle and really gives a great taste to all BBQ items. All the newer versions look sleek and fashionable but really are OTT.

Pro Q Flatdog gets really good reviews and won an award for best new BBQ product recently, and it couldn’t be more portable!

I use a Weber go anywhere gas BBB( Link ). For this short of thing. I have a carry case which makes it like a small hold-all. It’s perfect for days out ( make sure you get the Coleman gas bottles as the Weber ones are twice the price)

On the subject of bbqs anyone got a big green egg ? I won one , they cost silly money , any good?

Yeah they're very good. That said if you're not mad into it, flog it and but an Aldi one for £399 - they get very good reviews.

But if a learning curve with kamado cooking but plenty of guides out there

It's more akin to "proper" bbqing as most people, whether using charcoal or gas, cook with the lid open over hot heat so you might as well just use the grill in the house or an air fryer on grill mode. If you stick with it you'll get impressive results but accessories are expensive

Thanks. for the help I knew the hivemind would come up with some useful info!

I think the Cadac looks a good compromise between cost, robustness and portability. The intention is to use it to take to the beach or country and when I get a campervan to use it with that possibly as an alternative to having a fitted hob in the van? So the question is HP or LP? Why should I choose one or t'other and is it possible to hook up an HP to an LP gas source with an adapter and/or vice versa?

Get a LP and a 3.5kg bottle. Easy enough to carry about. Canisters will cost a fortune

I've got an old safari chef and it's been great, used it most down in southern France when camping when they don't allow charcoal BBQs.

The grill plate is really good, reversible.

One thing to note though, it is only a single gas burner and sometimes it helps having 2 so I bought one of those cheap cassette type gas burners to use along side.
