I remember when we were linked with Douala and it looked close, I was so excited at that time. Especially after signing Rochemback ... I remember when we played Sporting in the UEFA cup and both Douala and Rochemback were the thorns in our side in those games, absolutely dominated us .... then to be linked with both I was convinced we were on track to building a side that could easily challenge top six ha ha

Was gutted he didn't come in the end ... could've been some side we built if that came off. Would do anything to see us back building a team like that. Football is a billionaire's world now .. oh, to be back there again. Once we'd signed Rochemback I thought the Douala move was going to come off .. would've been wonderful to see what we'd have been like if we'd made those signings.

Just googled it. It seems he went to Pompey on loan in 06/07 and didn't score a single goal between leaving Lisbon and retiring in 2011! We all wanted the signing at the time, but maybe we dodged a bullet!

Branco, not Branca. According to the Echo at the time we bid £6.3m for RC in the February (1996) and Inter rejected it.

We then signed Branco on a free, and maybe intended to go back for Roberto Carlos in the summer we signed Rav/Emo, but he signed for Real Madrid that summer and I don't think anyone seriously thought we could get him after that.
