I don’t think so, as we’d have then had to sell him too.

I think we’d agreed terms subject to a work permit, the permit wasn’t granted and so the transfer didn’t go ahead.

That’s my understanding of it anyway. A bit different to when we actually DID sign Phil Whelan, wish we’d made a mess up of that one!

I'm not sure about Gillespie. Didn't that get announced just before a friendly against Newcastle out of nowhere? Then he failed the medical.

I think you're right with your recollection of what happened. Although I'm sure I remember him featuring for Boro in the latest update of Championship Manager at the time (unless my mind is playing tricks on me). So perhaps others thought he'd signed too.

I remember when we were linked with Douala and it looked close, I was so excited at that time. Especially after signing Rochemback ... I remember when we played Sporting in the UEFA cup and both Douala and Rochemback were the thorns in our side in those games, absolutely dominated us .... then to be linked with both I was convinced we were on track to building a side that could easily challenge top six ha ha

Was gutted he didn't come in the end ... could've been some side we built if that came off. Would do anything to see us back building a team like that. Football is a billionaire's world now .. oh, to be back there again. Once we'd signed Rochemback I thought the Douala move was going to come off .. would've been wonderful to see what we'd have been like if we'd made those signings.
