Ahoy shipmates!

Pirate fans are in for a treat this weekend at the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum as the annual Pirate Day returns for a day of sea-faring adventures.

Aimed at young pirates and their families, the day features a range of swashbuckling activities and events to enjoy.

Entertainment includes a giant parrot and magical seahorses, pirate walkabouts from Strange Twig Productions, storytelling with Captain Raggy Beard and object handling with Time Bandits.

A range of craft activities will also be available to all attendees, as well as special effects make-up demonstrations, face painting and access to the museum galleries.

The team from Middlesbrough Reads will be handing out pirate-themed books to encourage reading at home and bedtime stories.

Pirates can also enjoy two trails on the day, both available from the museum welcome desk. The Ship’s Cat Trail is free and asks visitors to search the galleries for the cats that have jumped ship.

The activity sheet also includes a spot the difference quiz, fascinating facts and a colouring in competition to win four tickets for a Virtual Reality Jungle Boat Ride at the Dorman Museum.

The Stewart Park Island Explorer Trail (£2 per trail) is based on a treasure map and includes exploring the wider park to solve the clues and reveal the map in full.

Pirate costumes and fancy dress are strongly encouraged to add to the excitement of the day.
  • Pirate Day is on Saturday, August 20 from 10am to 4pm.

Admission to the day’s events and entry to the museum is £4 for adults and £2.50 for concessions. There is also the option to purchase an Explorer Pass for £10 which allows for repeat visits throughout the museum’s opening season.

There is an additional charge of £2 for anyone wishing to do the Stewart Park Island Explorer Trail.

Tickets can be booked in advance via www.ticketsource.co.uk/museum/t-avvllay

Admission to the event and the museum is also available to buy on the day at the museum welcome desk.

Pirate Day is part of a wide range of summer activities at Middlesbrough Museums.

Families can also look forward to two events at the Dorman Museum: a pop-up puppet theatre with Whippet Up on Saturday, August 27 and Baby Dino Day on Saturday, September 3.

Other activities at the Dorman Museum include two exhibitions: Layers of Lace and Celebrating Connections, a family Flower Trail and a Virtual Reality Jungle Boat Ride.
