Are we at the stage now where we have to accept he's a decent player who can only excel playing in a certain system?

It's a real head-scratcher because he produces moments of individual brilliance for City, so even if this England system doesn't suit him, I can't understand why he's never able to produce these moments for England.

Time and time again yesterday he went for the safe option.

All city players abysmal yesterday
Walker dear me, worse than Engel at Sheff Wed
Considering him and Stones have played together for years, there seems to be no understanding between them. Most of their attacks came between them two. They are constantly giving each other poor passes.

I agree about Walker though. I'd stick TAA in at right back for the next game.

He's a fish out of water in this system. He's stuck out on the left. This is a lad who's been scoring 20+ goals a season.

Frankly no point giving him stick or starting him if he's not going to play on his preferred position.

I'll bring it back to Boro. We've played Azaz on the left a few times. He looks lost and simply not in the game. They are the games he received some stick. A completely different player when in the middle (10 role ).

You can't just shoe horn a player in. I think Gordon is the most natural player to give us the width we need. I was screening for Trent and Gordon on the right last night. That said said clearly 'what do I know ?'😂

I thought we saw glimpses against Slovenia. Foden seemed to have a bit more freedom, drifted inside and got some excellent balls into the box.

He does seem to take the safe option but that could be said for nealy the whole starting XI. It was only Mainoo and Bellingham who seemed to keen to run at Slovakia whilst everyone else wanted to go sideways and backwards before moving forward.

Technically we are way off a lot of nations. we need at least double if not triple the amount of passes to get near the opposition box.

Something just doesn't seem right for me. If I recall at the last Euros didn't we play 5 at the back? Id genuinely like us to back to it and have Foden and a number 10

Pickford
Trent Walker Stones Guehi Saka
Mainoo Rice Bellingham
Foden
Kane

I was watching in Thailand so no English commentary and therefore dont get swayed with the pundits thoughts . I thought Walker was poor but usually puts in a 8/10 performance . Foden looked like he was playing safe, had a couple of shots and was unlucky pushing that 1/2 yard forward in getting offside for his goal. We we poor in the first half and started brighter in the 2nd but still lacking quality passing and no killer ball into the box . Slovakia defended in numbers tho so it was crowded ... hey ho we won

We played with a back 5 against Germany and Italy, we played with a back 4 against Croatia, Scotland, Czechia, Ukraine and Denmark.

If Foden just holds his run for half a second more it's a tap in...it was poor.
Agree, it was poor from Foden, should have been able to stay behind the ball and it cost us a goal. Goals are like rocking horse sh1t in this team so we can't afford for things like that to happen.

I really feel for Foden at the moment. Being played out of position, and with those around him playing a really low intensity game. Short safe passes is how they play at City, build the intensity and then look for the runs in behind/ space to open. We do short passes but with no ball pace, and 3 touches between return passes. We have all our attacking players coming deep instead of in behind.

To balance the team I feel that someone needs to be taken out from Kane/ Bellingham/ Foden. I'm glad I dont have to decide which one but it feels if we had more attacking threat in a left forward, space would open in the middle and also for Saka/ Palmer on the right side.

A big problem with England for me was the opposition letting the centre backs have the ball and just marking the midfield. The movement was poor and none of them wanted drop in to pick it up, Fodens prefers it to feet than running in behind so the opposition defence are happy to play a higher line. Saka also seems to want it to feet too.

I’d play wingers who will try to run in behind just to create more space in midfield, then maybe Foden would look better. England are incredibly easy to defend against and we don’t really change it.

He also picked out Harry Kane with a beautiful free kick which should have been a goal.
Foden can do things no other England player can do.

We must be the only nation that can make a balls up of having too many good players.

Foden is a 10, if he can’t play at 10 then send him home, I will continue to believe he is a better 10 than Bellingham and Bellingham will eventually play at 8 for both club and country.

Next season when Southgate has finally gone Bellingham will play alongside either Rice or Mainoo and Foden will play in his correct position, I mean Man City have all the money in the world and they stick with him cos they know how good he is and the way he is treated by Southgate is just ridiculous.

My team FWIW for the game against the Swiss would be Walker alongside Stones with Guehi being suspended

Pickford
TAA
Walker
Stones
Shaw (as surely he must be fit by now)
Mainoo
Bellingham
Palmer
Foden
Eze or Gordon
Kane

Like you I don't see Foden as the problem. I see central midfield, in particular Rice, being too ponderous.
