is there a chance he’s been tipped off about the charges/punishment and has lost the plot? This run of results is unprecedented for them. And every time they hit a low, they seem to hit a lower one immediately after.

Just looks like he's scratched his own face in frustration.

His nose and lip were already like that on the pitch.
Guessing his explanation of catching himself with his nail is probably the real one, and he's bit through his own lip and it's swelled up afterwards.
The marks on his forehead look like scratches.
