People under 50 getting a vaccination

Does anyone know why some people Under 50 years of age without any vulnerabilities are being asked to come forward for a vaccination.

I know of a number of friends and colleagues who are between the age of 40-50 and actually one of his mid 30s who have all been given dates to go for the jab or have had their jab recently.

i’m just trying to understand how it all works as according to the government it is people over 50 who are still being asked to come for a vaccination so why is it that people under 50 are being invited if people over 50 have not yet all been vaccinated.

Also it seems like, using my wife as an example she is early 40s and has been asked to go to one of the same surgeries that most people in Middlesbrough have for her jab, (her doctors is nunthorpe) yet surely there are people over the age of 50 who all going to the same surgery have not yet had the jab. All seems a bit strange.

obvs I’m not peeved to have not been asked yet 😀

Part of it will be people not turning up for their appointments and them trying to find other people to give the jabs to, and at a certain point you will run out of people in the right age brackets.

There was that controversy when Shrewsbury Town's (I think it was them) first team all got vaccinated far ahead of schedule because of cancellations and a need to use the doses.

My partner's 18 year old brother has had his first dose, despite no health conditions, as he was invited along with her parents.

Could it be regional variations? My FiL (mid 50’s in the SE) had his before my mum (early 60’s in Boro) and my MiL (also mid 50’s) was about a week after that.

There’s no point stopping vaccinations in an area if they’re ahead of schedule and they have capacity id say.

Edit - as TC said, maybe finding viable options to use up vaccines at short notice? My elderly neighbour in his 80’s got a call at 7pm one night about 3-4 weeks after his first jab to ask if he wanted to go in for his 2nd as we live across the road from the HC and they had one dose left in their bottle

I'm 43 and was invited for my vaccination about 3 weeks ago, which was very surprising.

I don't class myself as vulnerable, but I did have a minor cardiac procedure done about 25 years ago, following which I've been fine ever since. One possible reason I was invited was NHS coding doesn't distinguish between my history and those of cardiac patients that are vulnerable.

The other explanation is the area in which I live has a lot of young professionals and relatively few older residents. If, on a local level, the older population has been vaccinated, I suppose they will move on to the 40 somethings.

I did accept the invitation; I feel I may have jumped the queue, but it certainly wasn't due to my instigation. However, my experience of working for the NHS is that querying whether it is really my turn will consume more NHS time that the 2 minutes it took to get the injection, so I don't really feel bad about it.

We were talking about regional variations the other day. I seem to know loads more younger (than 70) people in the South East who have been vaccinated compared to the North East. Which doesn't really compute as the south east is more densely populated, you'd think it would have been slower to roll out.

The other issue that struck me was that there is variation in organization on a regional basis.

Speaking online to colleagues in their 50s who live up in Northumberland, they were struggling to book first vaccinations because they had to book a second vaccination at the same time, and there were no slots available for this.

No such problem in my area; I was just asked to book a first appointment, and was then given a second appointment when I went. This obviously avoided the scheduling problems. Whether it has an impact on uptake of second jabs, time will tell.

I know people in their 30's who've been vaccinated in Redcar. With no health conditions or job requirements.

There's bound to be lots of overlap. So long as people are being vaccinated it will be better for the whole of society.

And we'll be in the boozer very soon.

Honestly if they've got spare doses that otherwise would go to waste I'm all for folk getting dragged in off the streets.

32 live on the OUTSKIRTS of Stockton ... haven't heard a thing from my GP or a mass vaccination centre....

Oh well....

I would have thought I would have had a call from my GP or the nurse.... seen as i'm on anti-depressants and we're having a global pandemic - oh well....

I think it'll be a while before you as a 32 year old gets offered the vaccine. They have just finished the over 70s

A bit of mess up on the booking website meant part of Notts offered vaccines to over 40s a few weeks ago instead of over 50s (I think somebody had a heavy night on the Sunday before and hit send before checking). So there are a few of us over 40s that have already had the jab round here.

I'm 47, fit and well with a non priority job and I got a call from my Doctors (in Brotton) last week asking if I was nearby as I was next on the list and they had a spare vaccine that day. Unfortunately I had just gone back to working in the office as opposed to home working that week so couldn't make it in time. They did however say that I am very much due to receive a call to book an appointment any time now, I guess when they next have a batch of 'first vaccinations'.

I presume this is all a little bit of a postcode lottery, depending on how quickly the local surgery to you can get through those older and in more urgent need of a jab before they get to your age.

Just about what happened to a mate of mine: he's a journo and was covering the first vaccinations in Leicestershire. Come the end of the day, there were a few Pfizer vaccines that had to be binned if not used. He was offered it and, of course, accepted.

I'm 34 and had one last week.

There is a vaccination hub in the building next door to where I work who were meant to be doing second doses of one vaccine. Due to some admin error they ended up with one box of a different type delivered which was going to go to waste, so popped along and offered it.

A colleague was dropping off their mum for a GP appointment a couple of weeks ago and got ushered in because the no-shows are starting to leave slack in the system at that venue.

I did feel odd queuing for it, but the person who jabbed me said it was the best way to reduce waste and frees up another slot when they get to my age group.

Fit and well, not vulnerable, not frontline worker or carer or anything like that. Edit: I’m in my 40’s

Had a text 10 mins ago from my doctors in coulby inviting me to book a vaccine. Clicked the link and booking confirmed for Monday at North Ormesby hub.

Quite chuffed to be fair

I live in Redcar but I don't know anyone in their 30s who have been vaccinated. My son for instance and all his mates. Plus nieces and nephews. Except one who works in an operating theatre.

Edit: I do know one who now has moved to Boro who is 35 but he is getting it as he is carer for his fiance.

Crazy isn't it?
