Peloton exercise bike

It amuses me the way people ask 'any good?' about these high end products! It costs 2 grand compared to the base level ones at 300 quid so obviously it's quite good!

Sorry not a useful response I know!

I posted on this a few months ago. I have the peleton app and the bike I have is a keiser m3i.
I've used the peleton bike as well.
It's a lot of £ but I think they are worth it.
I'm over. 50 and I've had two minuscus operations on my right knee . No problems at all on the bike ( I just don't stand up to ride)

Not really that great advice tbf, not everyone likes to go out for long bike rides and if you’re going to go out for 20 minute bike rides you’ll probably spend longer on safety checks and pumping tyres. Also it’s great glib advice in weather like we have now, not so easy to go and do in a thunderstorm or when it’s shotting it down, freezing, windy AF or snowing. Some people like that but not a lot. Likewise paying a sub isn’t that barmy because you’re subscribing to content. You’re not subscribing to the bike, you can have the bike without the sub. You’re subscribing to multiple daily classes which can be accessed at your leisure.

As for peloton, you have 4 options imo

1) Buy peloton

£1900-2200 plus £39 a month. Nice option if you can afford it but for me this is crazy money for what you get. If you finance the bike over 3 years you’re paying £100 a month including the sub! But you do get all the metrics and leaderboards etc

2) Buy a peloton knock off like echelon or Ajax

Bikes can be cheaper but subs are generally still £30+, I’d personally avoid this.

3) Buy any old spin bike and do YouTube classes or other apps

Ymmv!

4) Or do what I did and build a cheap peloton. Basically buy any bike you like, fit a tablet holder (£12) and cadence sensor (£29) and sync to a HRM and subscribe to the peloton app, it’s £12 a month which is a lot more palatable than £39.

I love spin classes, they’re short, they burn calories like crazy and I enjoy the music. I would previously go to the gym for them but obviously not that keen now, plus classes were generally on at like 5:30pm so a ballache trying to get there after work. I can hop on my bike any time I like - they’ve got live classes and you can access the back catalogue. The peloton classes themselves are fairly good with a good daily selection.i do go out on my real bike but it’s completely different to spinning and spinning is great for training and a quick sesh before work or at lunch etc (I work from home permanently now), and my partner can use it without us both doing gym subs. For many, they may Not live near a gym at all, or may not want to be around a gym in the current climate, so I can see the appeal.

I’ve got hue lights as well so get the authentic spin studio vibe 😂

The bike I use is a bodymax b15 which has rrp of £499 atm but you’ll find a glut of them for sale that people bought at lockdown start - I got mine for £200 in basically as new condition, so cost me very little setup. Conversely my outdoor bike cost about 7x that but I love both.

If you like spin classes, you can make any of those 4 options work and it’s what fits your budget and lifestyle

Sorry just realise option 5 - smart turbo trainer with existing bike... but that’s more for indoor “outdoor” bike practice rather than spin class, or zwift!

My bike was $2000 and I think it was money well spent. I've a decent road bike too but I agree with you re getting ready to ride etc

I am sure at 2k they are pretty decent. I imagine you can also get plenty of online reviews and opinions from bike experts. I think it's more the subscription but it's probably less than a gym or a sky package so if you can afford it then go for it.

I'm don't know why folk have a go because you have 2k to spend on a bike. If you can afford it and you will use it then no problem. Its better than spending it on drugs and booze😂. My missus would blow that on makeup or clothes if she had it.

It's quick and easy to just jump on and do 20-30mins without the hassle of going out on the road. It's no different to a treadmill. You would comfortably spend £39 a month going to a gym. Also it's one less cyclist on the road😉

My mate has one - swears by it. I’m put off by the monthly subscription.
Two things worth checking out.
Pre lockdown there was noise about them going bust (huge demand since tho)
Lots of -ve reviews on trustpilot.

I’m looking at Wattbike Atom. Much cheaper, reviews are better (from cycling mags) and you aren’t tied to peloton classes

I think you've got to look at why people go for a peloton rather than a Wattbike, Zwift etc as to me they're two very different things.

Mrs Jumpers, an "ocassional cyclist" got her peloton as she was missing live Soul Cycle classes from when we lived in the US. She loves the loud cheesy music, dark lights and motivational instructors, and the peloton was the closest she could get here when she couldn't get to the live classes in central London.

I on the other hand, as a "serious cyclist" have a smart trainer with Zwift set up in the summer house, as I am much more into the gamification element and seeing how I fare against myself over the same courses (like in real life) and find the loud music and annoiying instructors well....annoying.

To me the two aren't directly comparable, other than they're both indoor exercises involving pedaling, but appeal to two very different groups of people.

Good points
Do Zwift do spinning classes too? I’m currently on BKool.

I guess you’ve also got to be careful you don’t mount a curb or go trough a red light.otherwise Small Town will be all over you ;)

Nah, no spinning classes on Zwift - hence why I use it.

Although on Zwift you do sometimes "crash" into other riders (just a bug in the software) which I'm sure Smalltown will be ranting about at some point.

Make sure you get the 2020 one as it reduces lag etc on zwift, have they made it so you can multiple head changes yet? I remember reading the dc rainmaker review and he said it took 1-2 seconds for each gear to kick in which was a bit of a killer, but hopefully fixed in the new one

As LJ said though it’s more a turbo trainer built as a bike / proper bike training whereas peloton is more about having spin classes at home, less focus on realism.

That’s why I built my own solution though so that I can use various options to get it to do what I want it to do, doesn’t lock me into any one platform or any platform at all 👍🏻

I've looked into this Peloton is aimed at chesire housewives, not at serious amateur atheletes. It's over priced.

Wattbike Atom and Zwift is the way I'm gonna go once I create space for it.

Christ, that's one pretentious statement. Care to define "serious amateur atheletes" ?

It offers virtual spin classes, there's plenty of "serious amateur atheletes" who enjoy spin classes.

Do you build to order ;)

Ha ha no but it’s literally a case of buy a bike with a spec you like, add a tablet holder and a cadence sensor and away you go. You can skip the tablet part and cast your phone to your tv or just use your phone if you want (can get phone holders).

I really like it.

That’s the bike I have, but I wouldn’t pay that for it, as I said a glut of this model available on Facebook marketplace eBay etc mostly in as-new condition. I’d rather have magnetic resistance and belt driven but it’s not noisy to run, it’s smooth and I enjoy using it. I seriously considered peloton, all the clones and turbo options and for me this fit best

I was more surprised that the peloton app was so cheap on iPad compared to a bike sub. If it was the other way round I may have been swayed.

People look down on spin class as women’s exercise but it’s a great workout
