I will add that I also need to know if it is steamed or baked before I order. Some of the steamed pies are revolting.

The UPEX Parmo Pie. Pie or not?

It’s kind of the opposite of the OP description.

Bottom of the pie pastry. The “lid” isn’t a pastry lid. Just cheese which encases the filling.

I do miss the UPEX van which used to set up near the underpass.

I do agree with the OP though. I hate places that falsely advertise a pie. It makes me want to boycott such establishments.

Hmm, the steamed ones are called puddings , as in steak and kidney pudding, and the pastry is usually always suet pastry. so if someone has been passing these off to you as pies in dining establishments then you might need to consider changing the places you visit because they are definitely not pies.

I will name and shame the Mother Shipton Inn in Knaresborough who have a pie on the menu but last time I was there it was actually a steamed pudding...

 
Stew served with a puff pastry lid.
Disgusting. Too many pubs trying to pass these off as pies. I always ask.
BTW the disappearance of real upex and real Newbolds mini pork pie ? What’s all that about?
Both had “ revivals” but were never ever the same, why? Food laws ?
Same with the savory duck sarnies from the cafe opposite the Capt Cook, hod knows what was in it but it was gorgeous. Nomnom nom

The flaky pastry lid is a cop out. It's not a pie.
 
The Northern Porker is coming back to Redcar next week. Cleveland Street. Thats a steak n kidney in the bag then for Swansea half time
