Peace in Northern Ireland

Not Geyland! I was taken by a couple of expats on two occasions to see somewhere that tourists didn’t go. We went for food and beer, not to gawk. I felt distinctly uncomfortable, but maybe that was just me Brian, though when I explained where I’d been the next day, some of the bods did say that it was known as ‘Mugger’s Corner’!
My best friend lived near Geylang when I lived in Singapore and we spent most of our time eating and drinking there. it’s a Great place and completely safe.

I’m sure you’re right Brian, just relating that I had a couple of incidents where I felt uncomfortable, and certainly not Geylang, which as you say was fine. But they were the exception, and the rest of the time the only challenging bit would have been the impact on the wallet, but those were the days of a deep expense account.

I would love to know where you felt uncomfortable. I lived there for years and experienced every part of the island and never felt uncomfortable. I probably dated a girl in every corner of the island too haha!

Not doubting you at all but just very curious.

Must admit I never felt unsafe anywhere in Tokyo. If there was a city in the world where I’d have backed myself to open a can of whoopass on anyone who tried anything with me, Tokyo was it.

There’s a reason Sinn Fein/i r a we’re so keen on it.

As they knew it was a defacto back door to to unity.

Btw people forget that the full name of the tories is the

Conservative and unionist party
Stop this Sinn Fein/IRA nonsense. Sinn Fein are a political party,, democratically elected on both sides of the border.

Or are you going to start referring to Conservative and Unionist/DUP/UVF/ UFF etc?

Sinn Féin campaigned for Remain and have since considered Brexit a profound misjudgment by the UK. https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/politicsandpolicy/sinn-fein-brexit/

Genuinely the misunderstood political party I'm the British Isles.

If NI ever did vote to be unionised with the South, and the troubles did flare up.
Would British troops be present or would they withdraw?
I understand this is a hypothetical scenario but it is also a very possible one.

What do you expect when the leaders of Sinn Fein are coming out with utter crap like "there was no alternative to the troubles" & "our patriot dead".

Theyve been romanticsing the troubles for years out of the nationalist propaganda machine.

Being from there and having grown up through it until I left home at 19, there was never anything romantic about it.

With respect you and others are missing the point: there is supposed to be 'peace' in Northern Ireland but while communities there continue to intimidate each other and need to be physically separated from one another peace is just illusory
The problem with this point of view is that in northern ireland most people just get on with their day to day lives, People dont care what your background is, although yes there are still some who make the headlines but certainly it's not a concern for most people here. The peace walls are still in place and are actually used mainly as a tourist attraction. I have lived in areas that would be considered republican and areas that would be considered loyalist and never had any sort of trouble ever.

Blimey how many from NI do we have on here? I never knew Boro were so popular there!

Also, can we take from your username that you are of a slightly more nationalist persuasion, or does it not work like that? I'm not bothered in any way (none of my business), just curious.

You think the Peace walls are just a tourist attraction? They were supposed to come down by this year but still 60 left, all symbols that there's no real peace because sparks would soon fly without them.

And yet they want to be taken seriously when the likes of Michelle O'Neill comes out and condemns the attempted murder of PSNI officer John Caldwell by dissident Republicans.

What's the difference between that incident and a member of the PIRA murdering an off-duty RUC officer?

Oh I forgot. The difference is the "war" is now over.

Not that popular!

I didn't know of any other Boro fan living here until Facebook came along. A group for NI supporters was created and we met once in Belfast to watch us beat Watford with Scott McDonald scoring the winner. I think there were about 10 of us, although the FB group is sizeable.

We had plans to travel together for a game but it never materialised.

I travel on my own to the games but am very fortunate to have made a lot of friends in Middlesbrough. Best and most welcoming people.

I grew up in what would be considered a nationalist area but have lived in various parts of Northern Ireland and married a protestant girl. I don't have time for all the Northern Irish political bull****. There used to be a Northern Ireland middlesbrough supporters club that met monthly many years ago and we made a few trips across as a group at one stage

Tensions would be stoked by a small minority but the majority living in those areas don't want to be involved and just want to get on with their own lives

Even the dogs in the street know that the IRA army council still exists and is pulling the strings of Sinn Fein and controlling the party from behind the scenes.

NI Politicians have even complained about Sinn Fein MPs having to consult the 'sinister' men in the background over policy matters - people like Ted Howell ( rarely seen in public but very influential with policy decisions and strategy) Padriac Wilson (IRA discipline enforcer) Big Bobby Storey (now deceased)

Gerry Adams old IRA colleagues laugh at his claim to have never been on the army council. They say when he used to say 'I will take that back to the IRA to discuss' all he had to do was look into the mirror at himself and speak.
