Peace in Northern Ireland

There’s a reason Sinn Fein/i r a we’re so keen on it.

As they knew it was a defacto back door to to unity.

Btw people forget that the full name of the tories is the

Conservative and unionist party
Can only happen with a majority, and surely if that's what the majority want then it should happen

I don't think the demands of terrorists should have any influence on a democratic process. Maybe we should force Ukraine to be part of Russia again to stop Russia's invasion.

may be, we should give them democratic process then, let them have a vote 🤷🏼‍♂️

It will be a blood bath if it ever looked like happening in the next 50 years.

I remember a quote from Andrew Bonar Law that stuck with me when I did A level history he said “ There are things stronger than parliamentary majorities…I can imagine no length of resistance to which Ulster can go in which I should not be prepared to support them".

He made it clear he would defy any democratic vote for then Home Rule in Northern Ireland.

He later went onto to become Prime Minister of the UK.

Unification is inevitable. Brexit likely to speed it up I can see sadly the troubles starting again.

"Scariest place I've ever been to?"

Wow. I've lived here for over 30 years and have never felt afraid.

The peace process isn't hanging by a thread either. The severe threat was only dropped last year, it had been in place for many years.

Well I'm basing my impression on a week long visit 10 years ago based in Belfast staying at Days which is now Holiday Inn. Besides making the mistake of walking into the loyalist part of Derry and a few gunshots one night I had a lovely stroll up the Falls Road then into Northumberland Street (which had a steel gate that was closed to traffic between 6pm and 6am), a visit to the so-called 'peace' walls dividing Republican and Loyalist communities and back down Shankill Road with plenty of threatening murals on the way. Why would you need walls and gates to keep communities apart if it was so safe and why would you allow murals glorifying murderers to exist if there was a genuine peace?

Terri Hooley's Good Vibrations record shop was fine though and a decent coffee downstairs, and this was worth a visit https://ohyeahbelfast.com/exhibition/ though I pointed out that there was no mention of Lick The Tins, a glaring omission

I could show you places in LA or Rome for example that wouldn't be safe wondering around at a certain time of day, and that's the case for many big cities. The city centre is as safe as most I would say

I cannot think of a single city that does not areas you need to avoid, especially at night. Even Tokyo and Singapore.
Why should Belfast be any different.

It seems that I remember
Scattered Shreds of far off days
The savage beat of Solider's feet
On streets of broken glass
That crashed the lie of justice
England brings to foreign lands
The truth came out
Without a doubt
In Nineteen Sixty Nine

How many must have thought
That things would work out differently
With Labour men in government
"The workers Own Party"
Who brought out their true colours
And nailed them to the mast
Served the Union Jack
As they always have
In Nineteen Sixty Nine

You have to draw the Line
Sometimes
And I drew mine
At Labour's house-trained "socialists"
The lowest form of hypocrite
Who talk but when the chips are down
Stay Loyal to their King and Crown

How desperately they try though
Schemes of treachery and lies
To hide their hands stained
Red with Blood
Of Countless Irish Lives
They talk of "dangerous gunmen"
'The sectarian divide'

And they try to kill the truth behind
Nineteen Sixty Nine

This. It’s all a bit of bluster. It’s fine.
Come and visit NI, you won't regret it. Belfast is a great city break and there is tons to do if you're here for 3 or 4 days.

We’re playing 2 shows over at McHughs in a few weeks time. Can’t wait to be back. I’ll be over for the Lammas too.

With respect you and others are missing the point: there is supposed to be 'peace' in Northern Ireland but while communities there continue to intimidate each other and need to be physically separated from one another peace is just illusory

Which band do you play in? Sounds like it's going to be a great trip.

There have been plans to take the peace walls down. It will happen in the next 5 years I bet.

Dong forget the troops were originally sent in to protect the catholics. And look how quickly that changed.

Where in Singapore?
Not Geyland! I was taken by a couple of expats on two occasions to see somewhere that tourists didn’t go. We went for food and beer, not to gawk. I felt distinctly uncomfortable, but maybe that was just me Brian, though when I explained where I’d been the next day, some of the bods did say that it was known as ‘Mugger’s Corner’!
