The way I remember Traore leaving us was the release fee was 18m but that was for a 1 off payment, a thing which is quite uncommon at that level. Wolves chose to pay over normal terms, like 4 transfer windows , so we upped the price to 21m and they had to agree. However , We had to give Villa 25% of the profit we made. Since we got him as a player exchange its not known to us fans what actual value was on the player when he came to us.

Don't look at those in isolation, as they're not in isolation. You need to win big on your wins, if you have a history of bad losses etc.

Also, consider value of money received, compared to their actual worth.

17m was a crap deal for us on Traore, he was probably worth 25m plus, and in any other team than Wolves he would likely have went way passed that. I know what you mean about the size of the buyout clause, but we shouldn't have been paying £9m if we had to take that amount of risk with such a low release clause. We were in the Prem when we bought him (form champo Villa) don't forget, not like we were in the Champo and not like he had done much before we got him.
~10m for Tav was a bargain in anyone's money with half a brain, what's he worth now? He was only going one way.
Stuani went for 2.5m, and scored ~120/210 in a mix of Spain's top two leagues, over 6 years, they got an absolute bargain. Spence for 12m was fairly cheap considering the hype. To be honest, I thought he was over-hyped, but that's irrelevant as most of football didn't think that way, and spurs could probably off load him for £15m still now, and we get no addons.

The gain if it pays off, should be relative to the risk if it doesn't pay off, as we have a lot which don't pay off.

I can't remember many deals where we've bought a player for cheap and sold them for a lot more and been happy with the sum, or got some big money, probably way over the odds, for a young lad who we developed.

I'm not saying it's easy mind, it's probably hard to get players up here, but we've took a lot of punts and developed a lot of talent as we just don't ever seem to get the big fee or actual worth, not like other clubs appear to.

A straight up fee is probably not common on high-value players (for their league), but 18m isn't really that much for a Prem side. Maybe, if Wolves never had the money we should have got market rate based on instalments, 20m just seemed low at the time, and still does. Probably not many teams play a way which would suit him mind, Wolves certainly didn't and Barca were too big for him, they have better options to give the ball to.

I forgot about the 25% cut, that makes it even worse.

Yeah, I agree with what you're saying, but if we were getting big money we would probably be saying so? Details on fees often get leaked (lots of people in the chain), as do when players have release clauses etc. It's in an agents best interest to get the info out in a lot of cases.
 
Shame it didn’t work out with Payero but if we get 5m and that goes in the pot towards pulling off the archer/Ramsey mega deal who’s complaining?

I just think it's not straightforward.

Tav...we needed a bidding war. We didn't get one.

Spence...insisted on Spurs. And if we are talking hindsight, that looks a great deal for us.

With Akpom this summer...if there are not a bunch of suitors, and he won't sign a new contract , we sell him for as much as we can, or lose him for nowt in the summer. I doubt we are very often in a position to play hard be when it comes to negotiations.

We could have just held onto Tav, and would have probably got promoted if we kept him, but didn't he go early in the window?

Yeah, the money got for Spence was good (I said so at the time), and also that we didn't really need him with having Jones, but Spence's hype suggests we might have been able to get more. I expect he will probably end up leaving Spurs this window, or going out on loan at the very least. It's funny, as I'd have him back under Carrick, and we would probably get a lot out of him, he might have wound his neck in a bit.

If we don't get good value for Akpom we would probably be better keeping him, and it would help attract other players. We don't have a replacement in that position, and it's a key position, and one where it will be hard to find a cheap/ reliable player to slot in.

What would we think is fair for Akpom? 20m? I don't think there would be any point in taking less than £15m, unless we were sure we could actually spend that £15m on proven players. That might get us most of the way on Archer and Giles, and could then beef that up with other loans.

Problem with Akpom is he's probably gonna have to go somewhere as a No 10, and that's going to be quite risky for a prem side, and a lot of those where he could go maybe don't even play with a "10".
 
Assuming he is still our player..Has Payero made a stance he isn’t coming back here..would Carrick like to see him..maybe he could do an Akpom under his guidance 🤔

Assume that runs out when the loan contract does in 4 weeks? Two of those weeks are going to be outside our transfer window too, might work in our favour if he's someone we want to keep.

What if we don't answer the phone, deny we got the e-mail's? :LOL:
