We could have just held onto Tav, and would have probably got promoted if we kept him, but didn't he go early in the window?

Yeah, the money got for Spence was good (I said so at the time), and also that we didn't really need him with having Jones, but Spence's hype suggests we might have been able to get more. I expect he will probably end up leaving Spurs this window, or going out on loan at the very least. It's funny, as I'd have him back under Carrick, and we would probably get a lot out of him, he might have wound his neck in a bit.

If we don't get good value for Akpom we would probably be better keeping him, and it would help attract other players. We don't have a replacement in that position, and it's a key position, and one where it will be hard to find a cheap/ reliable player to slot in.

What would we think is fair for Akpom? 20m? I don't think there would be any point in taking less than £15m, unless we were sure we could actually spend that £15m on proven players. That might get us most of the way on Archer and Giles, and could then beef that up with other loans.

Problem with Akpom is he's probably gonna have to go somewhere as a No 10, and that's going to be quite risky for a prem side, and a lot of those where he could go maybe don't even play with a "10".
He signed for Bournemouth literally as the season began. Difficult to say we would probably have been promoted if he stayed. How do you reach that conclusion? Who knows what would have happened if he did.

The window was still open for another month though wasn't it?

He was our best player, and probably the most influential, and Wilder clearly wanted to keep him, so you would have expected that our chances would have been better, from that starting point.

Disagree.

I think if he’d stayed we’d have done slightly better meaning Wilder would have stayed.

Unthinkable now.

Haha, yeah, there is that.

I think most of our downfall was bad luck early on mind, and Chuba getting injured after looking very promising.

Happy enough with the squad and setup now mind, we just need to cut out the daft transfer/ contract mistakes, hopefully we're learning.

I'm gonna stick my neck out and say that if he does go to Man Utd, he won't be getting very many minutes, especially not when the Qataris get the keys.

I just think our bargaining power isn't as good as a lot of other clubs. Man City seem to have a good model at the moment - for their young players, they insert buy back clauses and decent sell-on fees for those they don't want to buy back. For more experienced players, its obviously the full fee. I'm not sure we would be in a position to negotiate those types of deals. We seem to have to accept the best offer we can get.

Indeed. We definitely don't have the same buyer or seller power, or football influence in general, as Man City (who are arguably the 'best' and even biggest side in world football at present).

Middlesbrough are a very small club operating on a small budget.Manchester are miles ahead in every department. If we did get promoted it be a massive struggle to stay up beyond 2 seasons as TV deals alone wouldn't be enough.we would need a major investment as gibbo is a very small fish.

Luton, Bournemouth, Palace, Fulham, Brentford and Brighton are smaller clubs than Boro when we are a prem team. Wolves, Sheff Utd, Burnley, are about the same size too. That's half the prem.

Utter rubbish

Seriously the crap some of our so called fans spout is amazing
On the grand scale of things it's true apart from man u ,city, arsenal, Chelsea, spurs, Newcastle,, Liverpool big clubs the rest are miles of. Teams such as Brighton will have short term success but without major investment it won't last and clubs such as your Brighton's will eventually go down. The so called big teams sustain success simply down to finance which in the current times is crazy in football.Boros success in 90s was more achievable but its a billionaires game now .
