Paul Merson on BBC1 now

He was superb for us and got us promoted. Clearly he had problems. No need for an apology just be grateful he came and delivered.
Agree with this. If fans want to concentrate on the negatives and be mortally offended - that’s down to them. His performances were a major part in securing promotion . For that I am grateful to Merse. Superb player

Ziege was another one of my favourite players….We brought him to the club to do a job, he did his job extremely well and it was an absolute joy to watch him in a Boro shirt, and then we sold him.

No Liverpool stole him

We never sold him at all.

Liverpool we’re actually found guilty by the FA for their underhand actions.

Two things I’d like to put.
1st- thoroughly enjoyed the programme when I watched it on iPlayer. Merse comes across as a guy who now recognises his demons he had and still does. His gambling documentary also strong stuff. Programme it self a nice pleasant stroll through the N. York’s moors, very easy watching.
2nd- the absolute difference in skill from a really top class player, as he was, and the rest of good but “ less talented “ players around them. I mean no disrespect to any footballers but the really ,really good ones are on a different level and to a certain extent that only becomes apparent when they play with mere “mortals” how good they really are.
I could waffle on but Merson had it, Souness had it, Juninho had it. Just made it look so easy. Apologies to any I’ve missed!

watching this you realize how ill he was with addiction. he comes across as very fragile, and honest. People can change for the better.

Never been bothered by these stories, but can understand why it bothers some. Tell you what though, what an absolute pleasure it was watching him play for us. He really was a magician. One of the greatest players to ever represent our club, even for that one promotion season alone.
Dead right.
Considering what was going on in his life, its amazing he did as well as he did.
Mers was immense. "The magic man"

Did Merson mention Middlesbrough at all?

I watched the programme but I thought he came across as someone hoping and saying he's beaten his addictions, but not sure about it. And he fell over too.

Nice scenery though.

There was one moment where he came across a Father and Son and the lad was wearing a Boro top. He shouted "Up the Boro" and had a chat with them.

Can't remember exactly what he said after that but it was something along the lines of "I had no choice at the time I had to leave cos of my addictions and I hope Boro fans understand that now"

he also mentioned living with Gazza. Don't think that was a sensible decision.

Amazing scenery btw. I like the way it was filmed.. his train of thought as he's walking through a beautiful landscape and reflecting. He's obviously consumed by his addictions and trying to find a way out, walking in nature helps. Forget about the football, this is a story about a man's path to recovery. I hope he makes more like this.
