Parkinson's Spinal Implant

The receiver described it as 'rebirth' after it allowed him to walk without falling over.

I don't think any of us would fully understand how it feels to be given a new lease of life like this.

I met a guy in France this year who suffered from Parkinson's and was the most amazing guy I have ever met.

His wife was struggling getting him out of a cafe in his wheelchair and I helped her. It turned out they were English and asked she asked if she could sit with us at our table outside.

I had just ordered drinks and asked the waiter to bring two more glasses and we got chatting.

It turned out that this guy, who was originally from Sheffield, had gone to Teesside Poly and had also worked for Radio Cleveland in the 70’s. He spoke fondly of Middlesbrough, the people and people he night life. He said he loved and had seen some great bands in The Rock Garden.

A lot of his speech was broken and his wife tried to fill in on this. You could see he was getting frustrated with her and himself for not being able to finish his sentence. When she was doing this I would stop her and ask him to carry on.

Is wife did tell me he had received a MBE for charity work and fund raising and he was embarrassed by this and played it down.

He told me his Saturday’s were spent watching the Boro and we fondly reminisced about the Charlton era. At one point he just blurted out the first eleven.

Trapped inside that decaying body was a marvellous mind.
