I've always found it difficult at Reading as it's not really near the sort of streets you can park on - it's all main roads and business centres. There are unofficial matchday car parks nearby for a few quid - I think the one I usually use was once a speedway track, if that helps. The shopping park next door has a time limit to stop people parking there for football. So unfortunately I've never been aware of anywhere free, although I'm happy to be corrected.

A bit of info here, but again, no suggestion of free parking anywhere.
I used to park opposite the ground on a massive open bit of ground. Then last time I went they had built flats. I remember it being a right ball ache trying to find anywhere near.
No street marking and and the shopping area is a max of an hour. Also enforced by all accounts.
I ended up driving into town and more good luck than good management found a park and ride car park (it was sign posted). You bought a parking ticket and it gave you free bus fare straight to the ground. Also straight on one after the match. I think they ran every 15mins.
It was a couple of years ago. I doubt much has changed.
I used a parking app. Lots of local houses allow parking on their drives. Walking to the ground there were a few factory places about 10 minutes away to the East of the ground.
I’ve always been prepared to walk about 15 mins. Plenty of on street parking at Factory Drive S off Basingstoke Rd. Callington Rd is where we last parked for free. It’s an easy walk and excellent get away to motorway.
Theres a pub on Basingstoke Road about 15 minutes walk from ground.
The World Turned Upside Down. I always park there.
Enormous car park. Good carvery, well priced. No problem with away fans.
By the time you get back to car, any traffic jams to M4 have gone.
