Paris for 3/4 night break

Keep looking at hotels but dont have a clue if they are in good areas. The areas seem to be numbered. Any idea what areas are more central so we dont have to travel about too much ?Or any recommendations?

Parisian friend of mine recommends arrondissements 1-4 as they are the central ones

Not sure why you'd just want to stay just 3/4 of a night, you have an early start?
