Paddy McNair

Great unstoppable goal by Paddy as you say NB, thoroughly deserved, but Chuba's first goal was absolutely amazing. He hit the ball from the left side of play, across the goal and keeper into the far left, which their keeper had well covered but for a tiny space probably the size of a carrier bag to his left, which Chuba exploited. Magnificent goal and one he'll remember for a while I'm sure.

It was a tongue in cheek comment.
Chuba's first was incredible to witness.
It seemed to defy the laws of physics.

Paddy is a better footballer than a lot of the squad, he suffers a little because he’s good in several positions, he’s played midfield and been consistently good then filled in at the back and been consistently good. He’s played full back and advanced midfield for us, not many players can do a that. He’s not a fussy player and you can tell he’s like that off the field from his interviews and I’m sure Carrick can relate. We need to keep him in my opinion, he’s a great example to others.

The other thing with McNair is his effect on the rest of the team. I don't think anyone would argue that Fry is a better defender. But do we have to do a bit more defending when Fry is in rather than McNair, because the ball will come back a bit more. Fry will probably lose the ball a bit more? (I.e he'll clear it into space or into touch. McNair is more likely to look for and find a man).

McNairs range of passing means that'll happen less.

If you're holding onto a lead then Fry will help you defend that with great backs to the wall defending.

But McNair will help you defend that by allowing you to keep possession more easily. He's effectively an extra midfielder and we're more capable of taking the sting out of the game with someone like that at the back.

So it's not just about who's better at defending 1v1 there's a load of other factors to take into account. Which I'm sure Carrick is doing.
