Paddy McNair

He seems to have lost the ability to pass a ball to the intended recipient since late last season.

He was warming up infront of me yesterday and nearly every single ball he was passing went miles wide of who he was aiming for.

To cap it all off he never looks bothered either

Prefer him at right full back to Smith.
I’d agree in terms of raw talent but like dijksteel, both are clearly better than smith at right back however, smith looks to have the leadership and communication skills that both McNair and dijksteel don’t have and we desperately need leaders out there which I think counts for a lot…but I do think RB is McNairs only realistic option to hold down a place in this formation….

He's always been rubbish, especially for what he costs us. He is good at some things but none that add up to being a good midfielder, centre back or full back. He can cover several positions but he should never be first choice in any of them. He's too expensive to be a squad player. He should be sold and replaced.

It’s been said before but when he’s in defence he looks like a midfielder playing in defence, when he’s in midfield he looks like a defender playing in midfield. Who are you going to start him ahead of now? Fry or Lenihan? Howson or Hackney?

When the midfield is strengthened in January, he’s further down the pecking order. He’s been at Boro for over 6 years and we don’t know which position he plays. I thought he’d have been moved on at the end of last season anyway TBH.

Agree. He’s not a natural in any position and struggled in the position most thought he would suit ( right of a back three under Wilder) his time here is coming towards an end. Fully expect his agent to be touting moves for him now during the World Cup break with an early January exit in the pipeline

I'd imagine he'll be behind Clarke as backup CB as well. Think a combination of fitness and formation will see him show more for us given the chance than we've seen so far.

He's not good enough for a first team place, for me he never was.

Hasn't the turn of pace for the flanks, he'd be a disaster at right back.

Short memories here. Absolutely ridiculous, he was in our top 3 players 2020 & 2021.

That only shows the deficiencies in the rest of the squad. He's capable of having good games, like most players. He has some ability but none of it works fully in any position.

What position is he? Where would you play him? We currently have the worst midfield I remember us having for a long time and he's the worst midfielder of that group. He's our 4th best right wing back and 5th or 6th best centre back.

Again in our top 3 players 20/21 and 21/22 where we finished 7th both seasons. 90% of the time at CB.

Centre back all day long. I agree he's not worth a spot in the team elsewhere. Would be a toss-up between he and Dijksteel for me if either Fry or Lenihan were not available.

His numerous lapses leading to goals against strangely overlooked.
I don't think there were many games in the 20/21 or 21/22 season where this applies to him. Blackburn away is the only one I recall.
Jonny Howson for example has been directly responsible for more mistakes leading to goals in the last 3 seasons but rarely gets a hard time from our fans.

Useful from set pieces but other wise a utility squad player. I do think he suffers from playing every minute of every N/I game and they seemed to have played a lot of internationals in the last 2 years.

What about Luton away under Warnock. He collapsed to the floor trying to con a free kick instead of clearing his lines, the referee rightly gave Luton a corner and we promptly conceded. There was Stoke and Watford this season, when he tackled like he was carrying a piece of valuable pottery.

When people talk of our team having a soft centre at times, McNair is one of the biggest reasons for that. We don’t have an accomplished, orthodox defensive midfielder to run the midfield in the way Grant or Clayton did, we lack a commanding, leading presence at the back. The two areas McNair plays.

He’s a senior pro. He shouldn’t be pulling out of tackles or not tracking his man, its not acceptable. Presumably this is why he isn’t playing.

At the start of the season really thought he would smash it as the RCB under wilder, that position seems tailored made for his skill set. The fact on this thread people are debating his best position is for a player who has played over 150 games over a 5 year period is telling in itself.

His best position is irrelevant. My best position is striker but I'm not good enough to play for a championship team. That'll be the same for McNair whichever position we decide is his best.
