Out of contract players.

Boro players who are out of contract at the end of the season. Some very experienced players who won’t be easy to replace and will leave a huge gap in the squad if they don’t sign a new contract. On the other hand the wage bill will be reduced. Some tough decisions ahead.

Daniel Ayala- I’d keep but a lot will depend on wages, who comes in for him and what division we are in.

Jonny Howson - Same as above. Player of the season for me.

George Friend - what a great player but old man time has caught up with him unfortunately.

Ryan Shotton- High wages no doubt but I’d release him and look for a loan player to replace him.

Marvin Johnson- With the Coulson coming through and Bola possibly getting a chance again (if he’s lucky), then I’d release him.

Rudy Gestede - I still can’t see the logic why we even signed him. Never mind the transfer fee and high wages!

My worry is never who leaves, it's always who we replace them with. That area never fills me with confidence.

Keep Ayala, Howson and Friend, depending on wages.

In two minds about Johnson, he's been alright this season and is a useful utility player.

Gestede needs to go for the good of everyone, including himself.

Johnson has been ok in the last few months. He provides a bit of pace and drive and would keep if contract not too expensive. I wonder how much our three loanees are costing us?

Out of all the out of contract players. Howson is the only one deserves a new contract.
Ayala can be a liability on set pieces with his wrestling tactics.
Friend has been a great servant to the club but time is up.
Johnson hasn’t done enough not all his fault Pulis sent him out on loan.
Shotton I’d keep can play any position across the back depending on his wages.
Gestede well it’s Gestede goodbye.

One outside the box in the league (Preston) and one outside the box in a cup match (Sheff Wednesday) that I can recall.

The Preston one was very dubious, although we lost the appeal.

Offer Ayala, Howson and Friend a one year deal each.

I'd be happy for us to keep Ayala and Howson on for another year on the same wages, but would only offer a new deal to Friend if he's prepared to take a wage cut.

Ayala is only 29, surely worth more than a 1 year deal.

He is also injury prone and as we've seen with Friend, persistent injuries really take their toll on players of a certain age.

I definitely think he's got again at least one good season left in him but fear he'll soon be on the decline.

I wouldn't sign any of them.

To be honest I'd only keep Coulson, Spence, Tavernier, Fry and Pears from the core group, and that includes the 3 Woodgate signings we have out on loan/injured.

Try and build the team around them long term, bring in players with pace and mobility, supplement with 4/5 loan signings.

You still need experienced players in a team no matter what. I’d build the team around some of the players mentioned but it’s the quality that we need to bring in and our recruiting of quality players is abysmal.
