One thing that baffles me about carrick

Why did it take so long for someone to take a chance on him? I presume he turned jobs down but from being at United to us is a long time not to take a job. Thank the lord and savour he is at the boro though šŸ”“
He isnā€™t ā€œbox officeā€, he isnā€™t renowned for playing ā€œgood footballā€ (previously) and most other clubs donā€™t have as big a history for getting success out of rookies (especially ex-United players/coaches, or lads from up the road). I dare say we would have been one of the many clubs not taking a punt on him had we not had success with Jack, Robson, McClaren, Karanka etc.

We donā€™t know if he was turning clubs down as well. He may have been in touch with Ferguson, who always says young managers should select their first chairman wisely. I wouldnā€™t be surprised if heā€™d offered advice to Carrick at some point. And he will get time at Boro. Heā€™s no mug.

Also, and this is quite left-field, but maybe heā€™d been made aware of the Boro job in the summer and was taking a short break - first time unemployed in about 20 years? - until Wilder inevitably left the job open for him.

Yes, Ferguson and Southgate probably in his ear too.

I think Iā€™m done with managers with ā€œreputationsā€ now. The only time a rookie appointment hasnā€™t worked for us resulted in that manager becoming a hopefully very successful assistant šŸ˜.

Next time weā€™re on the hunt, rather than exclude everyone currently in work as Gibson usually does, I hope he also excludes everyone with any managerial experience whatsoever šŸ˜‚.

I think he's probably turned down a fair few jobs in the lead up to coming here.

Having Alex Ferguson as your mentor basically saying 'That's the job for you son' makes your mind up really.

Gibbo was literally inundated with references from some unbelievable managers for him, it's a match made in heaven and long may it continue. Obviously he's from the North East to, he 'Gets it' I can't wait to see what we do in January then for the rest of the season

He's had offers, just didn't take them.

He walked away from united when Ragnick came in and was happy to spend some quality time with his wife and kids until the right job came his way. As he's proving right now he's a very intelligent and level headed fella. Just because Wilder made a pigs ear of it, don't underestimate how big a draw the boro still are. He could see he would get backed and given time here, although I'm sure no one expected him to have the immediate impact he has.

Itā€™s not a bad gig when you get loaned Mason Mount, Timori, Harry Wilson, etcā€¦ then fail to get them promoted and end up with the Chelsea job
That's true but he was the one who brought them to the Club - not "landed" on them. Whilst he failed to get them up he came very close to doing so eliminating Bielsa's Leeds in the semi of the play off before losing to Villa in a very close tense one off game.

Im not suggesting for one moment he is a great manager and no doubt it helped having a chairman willing to break the Bank to get promotion but to say it was cushy is like suggesting Robson had a cushy gig at Boro because we were one of the biggest spenders in the league.
