One of those games…

I know the Doom and Gloom will descend over the forum for a few days. But we were always going to lose again this season. The hardest pill to swallow is that’s it the fkin Mackems! Ultimately though, this game doesn’t define our season.

We were average in the first half and Sunderland attacked our defensive weaknesses.

I was expecting a revitalised side to come out second half but the Red Card/Pen gives us a huge uphill task. Not convinced that gets given if it’s near the Sunderland box (as the late Akpom penalty probably proved - looked more of a foul than theirs). That type of goal did look on the cards in the first half - frustrating they got in behind so easily again!

Collectively, we just weren’t good enough across the pitch.

I don’t like to single out players either but Steffen has once again had a ‘mare when the pressure has been on. Too many basic mistakes. I generally like him but when he’s bad, he’s awful.

Overall, Carrick has done an amazing job so far. Wasn’t to be today. The best side on the day won. We didn’t do ourselves justice in the first 50 minutes.

At least it’s not a Local Derby - or maybe it is now that that Mackems have actually won a game against us!

The key thing is that we don’t lose another next weekend at home to Watford. Hopefully we’ll see a much improved display.

We played really poor, that's what is the frustrating part. We can play miles better than that. One of those days where we could play until Thursday and still not score.

But.....they did a job on us and deserved the win.

We didn't control what we could control and deserved to lose. But we move on, I would rather we won that game and lost another elsewhere but it is what it is.

Hopefully we get a couple of players in over the next week or so to help out, especially in midfield.

I'm out at sea and couldn't watch so have a completely different perspective on it (exactly like England's Quarter Final in the World Cup). It's not often Boro lose against the Mackems, so we'll have to take it on the chin.

The Watford game becomes huge now. If the play-offs are the aim then the team must respond after a defeat.

If it was a penalty and a red card, as the Sky presenter and punter Caldwell and Goodman insist, why have sky sports shown it a dozen times from every angle and discussed it non-stop for 20 minutes after the final whistle 😂
Who are they trying to convince?!

I think that's at the heart of the issue for most on here today - we're light years ahead of Sunderland but just couldn't do it when it mattered.

First half was as poor as it's been this season and we still went in level.

Fully expect them to sink like a stone now, that's probably Mowbray's last hurrah before his usual torrid second half of the season form ensues.

Dont know about that like, they have somr decent players and a good manager.

We could have been 3 down at ht. Mowbray must have been licking lips seeing us playing with such a high defensive line absolute insanity. It was only a question of when they would break it and score completely the wrong tactics against Stewart we should have sat deeper and denied him the space . I also think howson and hackney were completely dominated in the first half as a duo. The physical weakness in midfield with playmakers howson and hackney as a partnership is there for the better or more physical teams to exploit. For me we are still missing a defensive midfielder and can't compete with teams like sheff utd Burnley and even Sunderland today with the physical style in there. I would love a player like a George boateng with hackney and either howson or mcgree in front as a trio. We are on the right track with Carrick but I think we need more quality signings in midfield today we set up far too open in there particularly with mcgree and forss as widemen.

Well done for hackney for keeping his head up he played really well second half

We played poorly and got what we deserved, I’ve been banging the drum for months our midfield has a tendency to lose out in the scrap too often as Howson, McGree and Hackney are collectively too weak without the ball.

I could see what we were trying to do first half, keep the ball and dominate possession, but it passing wasnt good enough and to many forward players were isolated.

Game was decided by the penalty and red card. Both were marginal.
