Oil Tanker Hijacking?

Hijackers must be a bit thick (for obvious reasons) - of all the countries in the world.. they pick to hijack in the waters of the nation with the SAS (y)(y)

I once read many moons ago that you are never more than 500 miles away from a fully equipped ready to go SAS or Marines unit.

Don't know if that is still true today.

Must be more than stowaways as they have put an exclusion zone around the tanker at one point.

The muppets aren’t very bright... the SBS practice this very scenario in Poole Harbour.
This happened last year off Norfolk I think... they didn’t last very long once the merlin was hovering over it

Ha yeh, I was reading on the BBC Website that something similar happened a bit back with a rogue group on a ship.
SBS went in.
Took them 5 minutes flat to sort it, cuff em and put the kettle on.
They will love this.
Its actually what they train for.

The Marines used to practice Oli Rig hijacking years ago. The funny part was that they were entitled to Duty Free which they duly filled their boots. Meanwhile back at the Helicopter base Customs would wait wringing their hands for the big VAT take. However Marines used to hover the Chopper and them bomb burst in all directions with their loot. Customs gave up after that.

So these fellas want to seek asylum.

Now I’m not against this but surely they will get deported for their crimes. They had done everything right until they hijacked the ship. Hand themselves over to customs and the processing begins. Now they are looking at jail

A nice little distraction from the main news...

Hardly hijackers and probaly a situation that wouldnt normally get an SBS reaction...
Are they trying to make this the current "Iranian embassy seige" moment?

And when you talk about the intelligence of the "hijackers" you have to look at why they are doing wat they are doing? May be theyre desperate asylum seekers, may be theyre terrorist but im guessing its the former?

oh for god sake why did you have to turn this into a political thing

1. The SBS are always involved in this situation. They train for this every day... the guys on board will have been given chance to surrender by the police... if they don’t then the SBS have to board as the police are do not have the training or the equipment

2. it’s hardly on the same level as 1980... it will be forgotten about in the press by lunchtime.

3. regardless of if they are illegals or terrorists they have committed an illegal act of piracy... that’s a pretty serious thing in 99%of the world.

4. if they are that desperate then why did they threaten the crew that’s been looking after them for two days then fail to surrender at the first opportunity

5. this is the second hostile act on a vessel entering British waters in a year... both have been dealt with in the same manner to deter others

6. The Nigerian Delta is a lawless place where piracy, kidnapping and hijacks are a daily occurrence.... mostly run by organised crime gangs... who is to stay this is not a new tactic to bring illegals into this country or worse?

All seems a bit odd with scant details - call me crazy but seems like some of the crew must have been in on this.

How did the stowaways manage to feed themselves for twenty days. Also its doesn't seem like they were armed but their biggest aggression was smashing some glass - given there is what seven of them presumably they would have been easily overpowered by the crew, i'm not familiar with the staffing of an oil tanker but i would expect it has much greater number than seven staff which would easily overpower the stowaways.

Obviously as more facts come out i could be completely wrong but all smells a bit fishy to me based upon the details released so far.
