Welcome to a mild, damp,East Midlands [UK]

Following last nights results in the Championship the Boro sit 18th in the table. Thats a point better than Blackpool, who are currently in the third relegation spot. We are a point and 4 places below Derby County who managed a draw at West Brom last night.

Ironically, we not only play Blackpool at the weekend, but the three sides below us are Barnsley and Swansea - who have been around the top six in recent seasons - and Hull City, who were promoted from the third division last season. Fortunes can change like the wind in this league, but we need to get out of this hole as soon as possible.

Its a "big game" and nothing but a victory tonight will be good enough for us fans, the team or Neil Warnock. Every player has to step up to the plate. We will be there giving vocal support in our thousands in Nottingham - what we want is to see a balanced side, 110% commitment from the players and no excuses from Neil Warnock or anyone else.

Neil Warnock offered an update on injuries ahead of Boro’s trip to Nottingham Forest (7.45pm).

Paddy McNair pulled out of the warm-up before our match against Coventry City, and the match at the City Ground may come too soon for him.

“I doubt he will make it,” Warnock said.

“He has slight strain on the inside of his lower hamstring.

“He’s going to do a little bit today.

“I’m hoping him and Marc Bola will be on the grass but we won’t be rushing them.”

Martin Payero was another who missed out at the weekend, but Warnock hopes it won’t be too lengthy a lay-off.

“Martin had just had his best training session, and then goes and does his ankle in the last few minutes,” the Boro boss said.

“It wasn’t anything too damaging, his ankle was just bruised, but but by going over his ankle he tweaked something higher up.

“I don’t think it’s anything too long, but if it’s too soon for tomorrow I’m not sure.”

Warnock admits the injury situation can be frustrating, but is remaining upbeat.

“It can be difficult but other clubs will have problems as well, you hope that you get lucky” he said.

“I had hoped we would have a more settled team. Not having Sammy Ameobi available at all has been one of the big disappointments.

“But had he been involved, Isaiah Jones might not have had a look in.

“We just have to make sure the players who are selected are ready to give it their maximum.”

"Forest's worst start to a season for more than a century"

'A lot of problems for the manager' - Sarah Clapson's Nottingham Forest debrief after Cardiff City defeat

The Reds were beaten again in the Championship to further their concerns

Nottingham Forest boss Chris Hughton against Cardiff City

Nottingham Forest recorded their fifth defeat in six Championship matches with a 2-1 home loss to Cardiff City.

Lewis Grabban turned home Max Lowe's drilled cross to give the Reds fans something to celebrate early in the first half, but the Reds were bombarded by attack after attack from the visitors.

Substitute Rubin Colwill pulled a goal back just 53 seconds after being thrown onto the pitch by Cardiff boss Mick McCarthy.

And the 19-year-old attacking midfielder inflicted another defeat on Nottingham Forest with his, and Cardiff's, second goal 17 minutes from full-time.

NottinghamshireLive's Forest correspondent, Sarah Clapston, gave her thoughts on a disappointing afternoon at the City Ground shortly after full-time. Here's what she said...

"Well, it finished 2-1 to Cardiff at the City Ground this Sunday afternoon. It was another miserable one on the banks of the Trent.

"That makes it Forest's worst start to a season for more than a century which is a grim statistic. They are bottom of the league table, they have just the one point to their name, and it was a woeful second half performance here today.

"The first half was better, they were okay. They had a lot to deal with from Cardiff but they coped alright in the first half; there were bodies being put on the line, defensively they looked much better than they did in the second half.

"They took the lead through Lewis Grabban 's goal, a really well taken and nice move. It was good play from Brennan Johnson and Max Lowe, a great run from Lowe who crossed it and Grabban finished it really well - that was his first goal of the season.

"Second half though there was nothing. Forest just offered nothing. They came under a lot of pressure.

"Two goals turned it around and then there was no response really. Forest were struggling to create and just looked all over the place at the back at times.

"They were sloppy, poor goals to concede and that's been the story of the season really. Scoring goals has been a problem now for a long time and that didn't really look like changing today.

"There are a lot of problems for the manager to change. He was asked today again at full-time about his future and the speculation surrounding that; his response was that he is focussing on the job at hand and he doesn't pay attention to any of the news around that.

"There is a game on Wednesday night now against Middlesbrough and it's huge in terms of the season. Forest are in a dismal position. They desperately need to get results before it starts to get away from them.

"There were some okay performances today but, for whatever reason, it just isn't clicking and they need that to happen quickly - they need the players they have to gel.

"At the minute there are players who aren't available. [Braian] Ojeda and Mohamed Drager are both self-isolating so they are not available for selection.

"Chris Hughton said there was still the possibility of a free agent but he didn't sound particularly confident of anybody coming in.

"So this is the squad he has got to work with and he's got to try and get results from them quickly. Forest can't afford to let this run continue as they are already in a difficult position and they need to get out of it fast.."

Middlesbrough sign Britt Assombalonga from Nottingham Forest

Striker costs Middlesbrough club-record £14m
‘I can’t wait to meet the manager,’ says 24-year-old
Britt Assombalonga

Britt Assombalonga is a proven scorer in the Championship, with 30 goals in 47 league starts.

Middlesbrough have signed Britt Assombalonga from Nottingham Forest for a club-record fee. The 24-year-old, who had an injury-hit three years at the City Ground, cost £14m.

Assombalonga is a proven goalscorer in the Championship, having scored 30 times in 47 league starts since joining Forest for £5.5m in 2014. Persistent injuries have held back his progress, with a serious knee injury ruling him out for much of the 2015-16 season. He signed a new five-year deal last summer after proving his fitness.

Gary Monk has been looking to strengthen Boro’s attacking options after they scored only 27 goals in the Premier League last season. Boro claim they beat off competition from top-tier clubs to sign the striker.

“I can’t wait to meet the manager and get ready for next season. There’s a good feeling around the place. From the minute I walked in it felt right,” Assombalonga said.

“I want to thank the Forest fans for being behind me, especially after my injury. They gave me a chance in the Championship and I want to say thanks to them and wish them all the best for the season.”

A Forest spokesman said on the club’s website: “Middlesbrough outbid various other clubs to sign Britt Assombalonga. As a club we felt that since the fee agreed met the buyout clause in his contract and he wanted to move it would be wrong to stand in his way.”

Nottingham Forest v Middlesbrough 1988-89 BRENNAN RIPLEY CHAPMAN GOAL

Useful draw for Middlesbrough against one of the better sides in the Division. Mark Brennan gives Middlesbrough the lead against Nottm Forest at The City Ground only for Lee Chapmans two goals before half time to put Forest in the driving seat. Ex-Forest player and Middlesbroughs recent record signing Peter Davenport crossed from the right late on for Stuart Ripley to head an equaliser and make it 2-2 which is how it finished.

Champions of Europe [Twice]

Just a reminder that the "Champions of Europe >>>>>>>you`l never sing that" (!) will no doubt ring out tonight: a commendable achievement - back to back European Cup wins in 78 and 79. It really is over 40 years ago! Only those Forest fans around 50+ will have any memory of the two finals and the open-top bus rides, as the team paraded the cup around Nottingham.

"Old Big Head" did a remarkable job - taking a slumbering anonymous East Midlands side, who were mid-table in the old Second Division - to the heights of European football. Amazing.

He is also Shirt Sponsor of the other club in Nottingham - Notts County. Founded in 1862, County could boast of being "The oldest club in the Football League" - until relegation to the National League, three seasons ago. Having faced huge debts accrued by previous owners the club nearly went out of existence.

Jake says his Grandad used to take him to Meadow Lane "as a lad".

Des Walker. Joined Trees Youth Team from 1980 to 84, then signed a professional contract and played until 1992. He was a stalwart Centre Back for Forest. Following departure to Sampdoria, then Sheffield Wednesday, he returned to the City Ground in 2002 - 2005. In total he made 341 appearances for Forest out of a career total of 671 games. HE was like the Spike Armstrong or Tony McAndrew type of player - in that he rarely experienced injury - was a dedicated professional and was almost first player guaranteed to be a starter on the team sheet.

Teddy Sheringham: Joined in 1991 and scored Forests first ever Premier League goal in the 91 / 92 season. After two seasons he moved on. His 24 year football career included Spurs, Manchester United, West Ham and Portsmouth.

Colin Cooper "Hes one of our own" - played for 5 years at the City Ground [1993 - 98] making 180 appearances and scoring 20 goals.
He did of course [in two spells] make 346 appearances for Boro in a career total of 606 games. Nuff said - we love our Colin. A great lad in our young team which gave rebirth to our club.

Neil Warnock says Boro are behind their targets this season

By Matty Jones

THERE are plenty of games still to be played this season but Neil Warnock is not hiding away from Middlesbrough's early season failures with the club off the pace in their hunt for the play-offs.

While there has only been six league games played, Boro have just the one victory to their name which came against Bristol City in their first home game of the season last month.

They come up against a Nottingham Forest side later tonight who are already staring down the barrel of a relegation battle with just one point all season. Chrus Hughton's side are in desperate need of a win this evening while Boro and Warnock want to avoid getting into a losing habit following the 2-0 defeat to Coventry City at the weekend.

The Boro manager honestly said: “No good lying and saying we’re not (behind target) I’m disappointed that we’ve not won at least four of the games really.
“That is life. You don’t get everything you deserve. I don’t think we’ve had much luck either. I still think you need a bit of luck here and there so I don’t think we’ve had much of that.

“You’ve just got to keep going. That’s all you can do.

“You know when you look around the country at the problems we’ve got, we’re very lucky to be in this job and the players are as well. We’ve got to try and give our fans something to cheer about at this moment in time.
“That comes with winning games.

“When I see certain teams who are higher up the table who I know aren’t anywhere near as good as us, it disappoints me even more.

“We’ve got to stand up and be counted and the players have got to stand up and be counted as well.

“Yes you can say they’ve not had minutes and they’ve not had minutes but you’ve got to get them minutes so you’ve got to play them at some stage and get them into the games. If that means we’re not as effective as we have been then so be it. But they’ve got to get games some of these lads so in the next two games I’m hoping we can give one or two more minutes.”

Will Chris Hughton still be Forest Manager come Christmas?

The knives have been out for Chris Hughton for some time. The issue goes deeper than the individual Manager(s) at the City Ground: the club has seen 28 Managers [some more than once as Caretakers] since the turn of 2000!
Crazy?!
Absolutely!
No wonder Forest have bounced along in the Championship with infrequent visits to the top six and regular disappointment for desperate fans who crave consistency and success.

It looks like another carcas will be cast upon the Managerial hand-cart anytime soon.

Its a comment on modern football that money is so much at the centre of the game - clubs scrapping for the cash-cow which is the Premiership. The Premiership maybe the richest league in the world, but its done nothing for English football, other than skew the market and force clubs like Forest [and Boro] to compete with clubs whose individual players are worth more than those individual clubs!

The casm between the Championship and The Premiership is widening, making it almost impossible for promoted clubs to sustain themselves amongst the rich boys.

The likes of Leicester are the exception which proves the rule.

Here are typical reactions from some Forest fans selected by The Nottingham Post:

[Edit]
Some of this narrative and the reaction of the Forest fans sounds increasingly familiar>>>>

Nottingham Forest fans unconvinced as Chris Hughton responds to criticism

The Forest boss is under increasing pressure ahead of the Championship clash against Middlesbrough.
1631701749632.png
Nottingham Forest fans have given their reaction to the latest comments from manager Chris Hughton.

After less than a year in charge at the City Ground, the Reds ' boss is under increasing pressure following a forgettable start to the season.

Forest have picked up just a solitary point from their opening six league games of the season, leaving them bottom of the Championship table.

It has led to calls from fans that a change should be made, with the club finding itself in a similar situation to one year ago, when former manager Sabri Lamouchi was shown the door.

When questioned about the lack of progress, Hughton told NottinghamshireLive : “In some ways we have [made progress], I came into the club in a difficult period - and, also, a difficult season. We had a lot of good moments last year. We struggled to score the goals we needed, but we were able to put some good runs together of winning and not losing matches.

“Some of it does reflect back to me that if it was a season of having crowds - particularly with what we get at the City Ground - possibly it might have been a better season, with the type of momentum you would have got from the supporters.

“It’s difficult to talk about making progress. I think in some ways we have.”

Kenneth Field : Made progress? In what way Chris? Downwards? Though pleased to see he's stating he's enjoyed his time as manager in the past tense

Mediawhy20 : The CEO has spoken about the direction of the club, well with CH as manager it is in the downward direction to League 1, A change is needed now in manager to give us any chance of avoiding the drop, and even now it will take quite a feat to stay up

Nick Brailsford : A lot of past tense references made in here

Richard Buck : If you call keep booting the ball in the air progress, the sooner the better

Dan Sempers : Progress down the league

There was also some backing the manager>>>>>>>>

Howley5012: The real gamble is whether, having scraped together survival last season with an inherited troupe of journeymen, he can do better with players who we are not sure he had any say in acquiring.

It seems insane to repeat the actions of last year by loading a new manager with a gang of newly appointed players the corollary to which is Hughton stays to see if he can make it work

Give him until Christmas during which time, if progress cannot be seen as players settle in, it’s over.

RedHope2: I would like to see all the Forest supporters get behind the manager and whatever team he puts out for the game against Middlesbrough. The negativity is not helping and anyone who was at the game on Sunday knows that we were playing much better than we have done recently until they scored.

Thanks again @r00fie1 for the write up.

Was really confident before the Coventry game that we`d had time to work on issues but it went all wrong.

I`m worried that our confidence has gone and a win will rectify that but it`s gunna be nervy as hell.

Feel this is a game we can easily win just as much as we can lose.

I`ll settle for a backs against the wall 1-0 win tonight, just to get a win ahead of another tough game at the weekend

Again, safe journey to those travelling

Anatomy:

Joe Worrall

1631720559635.png 1631721446027.png

Like most lads born within spitting distance of their "local" club - Joe Worrall has been Forests prize assett since he graduated from their youth academy in 2016. A vocal "leader" - he has seen eight different Managers get the sack in the last 5 years! During this summer 2020 , Trees fans were alarmed that Joe might be packing his kit bag and moving to pastures new - with Burnley [!] rumoured to be circling for a defender. But he agreed a new contract till 2024 - which we all know means nothing. Trees fans saw this almost as a new signing. [Echos of Dael Fry there?]>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Update on Nottingham Forest defender Joe Worrall's future amid Burnley transfer links

The central defender has a contract at the City Ground until 2024 but has been linked with a move to the Premier League
Joe Worrall is not demanding a move away from Nottingham Forest amid transfer links to Burnley and other Premier League clubs, according to reports..

The 24-year-old has been linked with a move to the Clarets in the past.

Central defence is certainly an area where the Turf Moor squad where reinforcements have been sought, with Ben Mee, James Tarkowski and Kevin Long having been the senior options available to Sean Dyche last season.

Over the summer, that need for new faces in the heart of central defence has been eased with the signing of Nathan Collins from Championship side Stoke City.

However, Ben Gibson has joined Norwich City permanently after a successful season out on loan at Carrow Road which ended in promotion to the Premier League, while speculation surrounds the future of Tarkowski, who has only 12 months left to go on his current contract and will walk away from Turf Moor for nothing this time next year as things stand.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Joe is a "ready - made" defender and Captain. He has those qualities, which were honed on loan to Glasgow Rangers - where he was described as their "best defender". Hes not afraid to get stuck in and leads from the front.jw2.jpeg

Just 18 months ago - during one of Forests rare attempts to stay in and around the top six, he rallied the troops to get behind the team:

Unfortunately for Worrall - and Forest - they stumbled at the final hurdle as their aspirations disappeared into the Trent....

There`s echos of Tony Mowbray in this fella: he will cause the Boro "forwards" big trouble if we let him!
jw3.jpeg

At 6`4" our forwards wont be walking the ball into the net.
He`l be looking to put down a marker early on.
Along with 33 year old Grabban upfront, he is Forests major threat tonight.
