Not enough money for HS2 beyond Birmingham

Is this really a surprise?
The original time scale for the project reaching Leeds and then Churchfenton always meant it was likely that it would not be fully delivered.

No one outside of the city could afford to use it anyway. HS2 isn't being built for the likes of us; regardless where it starts and stops.

It would be more cost effective putting mega WiFi and coffee machines in all the Home Office Workers homes who won’t be needing train now !

How much money would they have saved had they scrapped this waste of money when covid hit..... Would probably have paid for everything and then some..

Where does that leave those people north of Brum, in new build houses, who have accepted compulsory purchase? HS2 may never reach them but they will need an assurance of that, or they remain blighted.

HS2 will go ahead. Money is not a problem these days. The pandemic has taken care of that.
If we need money these days, the government either print it or borrow it. It does not matter a jot , because future generations are saddled with mountains of debt. This is now a fact of life.

I agree with that until the last bit. Money that the country borrows from itself doesn't have to be payed back. The UK has been in debt more or less continuously for hundreds of years. During my working life I never felt that I was paying back WW2 debts and in the same way, my children don't see the debts accumulated in my time as a millstone around their necks.

Any attempt to bill middle and working class people for this pandemic is purely political.

Quite right - @Anton_Berg don't fall for the fallacy that our kids will have to pay it back... that's just a Tory con so they can cut public services.
