Normanby Tesco

Had the unfortunate experience of being in Normanby Tesco on Sunday whilst two low life scum held the place up and pinched a lot of alcohol. I stood by and watched it happen, and I'm furious at myself now for doing so. I always thought I might be braver. Really upset the staff, but they mentioned it is happening more and more regular. Society seems to be going to the dogs.

Former Heagney's - I could never in my life imagine that happening say in the 1970s or 80s.

Normanby is not what it was.

Know a lad who was working for security in Tesco Redcar a few years ago. He tackled the thieves and got beat up by them. Because he had followed them off Tescos property(we are talking ten yards here), to try to retrieve the stolen goods, he did not get correct compensation from Tesco. Not seen him for years so not sure whther he got it retrospectively but told by others he did not.

In the last 6 weeks I’ve had a checkout colleague facing a knife and another a machete.
Both did the sensible thing and handed over cash and cigs and, as a result, there was no physical attack. You can imagine the mental torture tho.

Sadly, I think these attacks will become more common

Imagine what your family would think if you got killed for trying to protect a few bottles of booze?

Pick your battles, there's far more important things in life.

You definitely made the right choice

It wasn’t even his fecking booze. Imagine putting yourself in danger to protect the profits on a multibillion £ company. I know your instinct will likely have been to protect the staff but the absolute best thing to do is stand still and let them get on with it.

You did the right thing. Nobody was hurt and Tesco can afford it/are insured. No need to be a hero and staff aren't paid enough to protect the shop, they're there for the customers.

I worked in the co-op in norton for 25 years before it closed last year. Shop lifting got worse and worse to the point that we would only be able to put out 1 joint of meat and 1 variety of every steak each day....and they got lifted on average about 3 times a day after refilling. Bottles of spirits disappeared on a daily basis too.....and thats with a security guard...he can't be everywhere at once and they would send decoys in to distract them Don't feel awful about not challenging....we were told we weren't allowed to, as you don't know how dangerous they could be, but we always tried. We got told by the police that people were coming in as far a field as hartlepool to do it as we were on such a major travel route (bus routes and straight off the a19) and the scruffy gits were spreading the word amongst their mates.
Luckily we were never held up (as its a biggish store) but had plenty of overnight break ins in the last 5 years compared to 1 in the 20 years before that

I've not been in that position, but in my head I'd be the hero and intervene, get all the adulation and applause but lets be realistic, what is the point?

First of all, my Mrs would absolutely kill me, she wouldn't think my actions were heroic. I've got 3 kids, 2 step kids and she would see it as i risked my life to intervene and prevent theft of insured goods. My mam would say the same she'd go wild. My mates would be torn between thinking it was stupid, and cool, i'd probably earn a nickname off it and i may get a nice gazette headline and a free tesco shop but i also may get stabbed, or shot, or filled in for my trouble and they'll still probably get away with whatever they want and they'd only go do it again elsewhere. It wouldn't prevent anything, the cons of stepping in far outweigh the pros.

So my head says yeah step in, save the day but then realistically i wouldn't, and i'd be hoping my **** collapsed and i just sit still and shut up to get out alive.

I think your frustration with yourself is simply borne out of anger at seeing the injustice of what unfolded before you.

It's natural to feel like this, I think the vast majority of law-abiding decent people do, don't beat yourself up about it.

Agree jonny, it says a lot about @Fabiopaim that he feels such anger at 1st, witnessing such an appauling act & secondly, that he regrets he didnt intervene
