Seriously, imagine being constantly on the alert to see ill in everything you hear or read.

Is it a reflection of how happy, content, confident or sad you are in your life or is it more a personality trait that you're born with?

There's a very wide range of tolerance on here for example.

Way of the world these days - some people wallow in being outraged about one thing or another

Do you think it's because we don't (for the majority of us) have anything to whinge about in the same way that our parents did?
Real problems like finding money for the school uniform, the rent or putting food on the table..... these days its which car to get next or the latest mobile phone.

Some people like to be outraged on other people's behalf, when the people in question are not that bothered.

I get what you are saying, but I am not sure that holds water. If I am in a group of white men, and one of them makes a sexist or racist comment, should I let it slide just because there is no one there who is affected and offended? Maybe we should be speaking up on other peoples behalf?

It's the internet. It's changed everything. Everyone has a voice. Lots of people seem to lack the empathy that they would have if they were discussing something face to face or over the phone even.

It's like half the world has regressed into toddlers, unable to see beyond their own point of view. Which is strange because one would think that with the wealth of information available to everyone, people would become more used to hearing different opinions.

Absolutely, sorry. Didn't think that one through. I was talking more about comedy shows etc where there may be a character that the actor/actress is playing and people start getting offended for them, for example if a character makes a joke about someone that is gay in a TV show, and gay people find it hilarious, but people start tutting and saying, 'You can't say that' etc.

Not sure I'm making my point really? But yes, sexist/racist/homophobic etc derogatory comments should absolutely be called out.

I get what you mean, and its an absolute minefield.

Fro me its the balance between intention and perception. I could say something that I didn't intend to cause offence to someone, but if the perception by that person is one of offence, then the intention is not really valid.

I am sure we have all watched reruns of 70's ad 80's TV shows that are just not acceptable by today's standards, but at the time no one payed any attention. and thats ok, we have to evolve and we should be getting better and more accommodating as a human race.

There are numerous reasons why some people are more sensitive to criticism/pi$$-taking than others. Possibly having been a victim of bullying in the past being one. How about just erring on the side of caution and being kind if it's a total stranger, seeing as you have no idea of their background story?

What triggered your post?

I called a work 'mate' a melt. He said 'Do you mean I'm a snow flake?...... Mmmm nope just a 'melt' 😂

He actually went to one of the bosses to tell him I'd called him a melt. The very definition of bizzare.

I guess this falls into this category. I mean if you go running to a boss because someone calls you a 'melt' you've got issues😂. Then again if you're a boss who thinks this needs addressing then also part of the problem lol.

I should stress I don't use the term. It was just me being polite and not saying how I actually felt.

There are some people that populate this board that are obviously very sensitive and are more highly strung than others and most of us are sensitive to that. Thats the same in life really. Use some sensitivity and be nice to these people. Basic decency.

But then there are some that thrive on constanlty playing the hokey wokey just to get a rise. Thats sad.
And as I said, I feel very sorry for them.
