No Bags For Millwall

I’d
I’ve never understood this modern thing with back packs on an afternoon out at a match. If it doesn’t fit in your two jeans pockets you don’t blummin need it! Wallet, phone and change. It’s the Riverside not the North Face of Everest FFS
I’d been on a walking holiday then stopped off, on the way back to watch a game in London.
I had a small back pack with me and a steward did ask to search.
I described the contents 😳and said - are you sure?

He just gave it and external pat on the outside and let me go in.

I really can't stand pointless rules like these. What business is it if someone decides they need to have a bag to hold stuff they consider necessary to them at that time? It's not a camping rucksack which would need to go under three seats and we're not in 1950s Algeria with handbag explosive devices.

I've taken a bag a few times when bringing one of my kids because it's useful. I would hazard a guess that away fans and public transport users are far more likely to need a bag for their longer journeys and rules for the sake of it will just lead to avoidable arguments between annoyed fans and stewards who don't actually care but have a job to do.

Am hearing that Watford are also applying stricter rules also..

Makes a mockery of the "security" angle if you can take a bigger bag they just charge you!

Sweden have been all over this at events for a while now. We're heading to a music festival over there next week and there's a complete ban on bags at the event (admittedly it's not a camping festival but 12 or so hours with all that you can fit in your pockets)

I went to see Sharon Van Etten at the Brixton Academy last summer and it was complete chaos outside because of these bag rules. I was WFH that day so didn’t have a bag but if I’d been into the studio then I’d have been in trouble. There was dozens and dozens of people being turned away because they had bags with them. It caused loads of aggro and a massive queue. People were literally putting backpacks in the bins and carrying their stuff in instead. A security guard said you could go to Poundland and get a carrier bag and put your laptop in that if you need to. I wish I’d taken a photo of the bins overflowing with backpacks, it was an amazing scene.

A lot of music venues have the A4 bag tile these days. It isn’t too much of a hassle, you can get all that you need in a tote bag. There is nothing more irritating than standing behind someone wearing a backpack at a gig.

A tote bag will fit easily under a seat in a stadium or concert venue, it does make sense.

Why do they do it security concerns or something else?
To make more money.
I went to the Aviva stadium for a match - they used to let you in after a check but now they charge you €5 to store it.
Sometimes as mentioned you might come straight from work and you have your work gear with you, I’ve had it once at the Riverside and had my things in a Carrier bag, no problems, shoved it under my seat.

OT but went into Newport’s ground once, Steward stopped me, what’s that in your back pocket it’s a bottle… no it’s a Programme

Junior Smoggy has his Middlesbrough back pack with him at home games. A drink, large bag of crisps to share amongst our fellow fans, bag of Haribo, occasionally a tube of pringles and a bottle of pop for me.

I want to make a shout out actually as this is relevant. For a couple of weeks we used a tesco carrier bag instead of his boro bag.
The lady who had her ST next to us often gave Junior Smoggy sweets at the game. She was always thrilled to see him. Lovely lady.
On the last day of the season last season she had been into the club shop and bought him a new Boro Backpack. She wasn't renewing for this season so this was her parting gift to him.
On the very slight off chance she is on here, I'd like to extend my thanks. Boro fans are just the best.

Tote bags are very good when it’s raining.

Just yet another rule to impose on the long-suffering football fans to enhance their match day experience.

It's a stadium rule, not a football rule.

You're subject to the same restrictions whether you're off to see Spurs or the Foo Fighters (I dont know which one of those is less appealing TBH).

I often take a ball to games for a kick about but wasn't allowed to take it into a match once so now end up depositing it in a nearby hedge. Its always surprising when it's still there in London especially.

Heaven forbid you dont have your condiments
People need their stuff. I literally carry a backpack to work every single day. Even when it’s boiling like it has been today and the past few weeks. I carry sunglasses, moisturiser, a book, a notebook, a wallet, deodorant, keys, phone charger, pen(good quality 0.5 fine liner, obvs), heart spray, meds… plus lunch(inc. an apple). I can’t carry all that by hand or in a tote, especially on the days I have to carry my laptop. And just because I carry this stuff… it means I have to think about what I’ll do after work if I fancy going to the match. It makes going after a work a bit of a ballache.
