On number 2 in the top photos - Newport Bridge took a long time coming. There was massive lobbying for years by industry to get this connection bridged. But your photo shows the mouth of Billingham Beck and historically Newport ferry was operated by a guy that lived up stream on the beck and rowed down to make the ferry crossing near the bridge. The former Newport was just as the name implied a port - and if you look on some old photos of the bridge you can make out a 17th century granary/warehouse building - this was part of the Hustler (of Acklam Hall) estate and stood on the Newport bank, where there is now a small industrial estate (Letitia). Ayresome Green Lane once headed to the port and ferry.

I do that walk, Acklam Road, Leadgate Lane, Marton Road, Keith Road, Emerson Avenue, Tollesby, home

I clocked South Bank made up part of your trip and, though I've only been there twice since my Dad died, it did provoke massive waves of nostalgic reflection. Though, obviously, anything with "nice" as the first word of the title wouldn't promote the inclusion of South Bank at first.

Dockside rd to SBCO, Butters old workplace, I was on shut down on there for 6 months, and the 3 months on big B. That picture from the bridge is the Fertilizer plant wharf , packing sheds ICI. Who do you work for now Erimus?

I've worked at the saem place for the past 34 years, ex ICI plant North Tees over at Seal Sands

Do you know what those ball like plants are in the 2nd batch of photos

Once done a guvvie job for a bloke who lived in the dutch barn houses (Kier Hardy Close) 2 outside lights paid me with two carrier bags of tomatoes from his greenhouse, some good people around there rk.

Yeah, I had family round the Crecents and Uvedale Road area, which is what led me to walking round that way initially. I might even do it again next time I'm up North.
