NHS recieve 3% payrise

But that's not the way government borrowing works.
I understand that, but the principles (re debt) still apply. I do not want to leave a huge negative legacy for my kids and grandkids in this way, it is just plain unfair imho.

It's been going on for years and is unlikely to change. All these austerity measures have just been bollox

But we have lived like this since the 19th century- we have always been in debt as a country

This 👍👍

referring to this offer as paltry, appalling and shambolic when the above staff have had nothing doesn’t really look great to me.

Does an admin clerk in the NHS anymore at danger than a civil servant travelling on public transport each day? To me no
Vikster, I feel for you mate but you’re going to have to get yourself out of this brainwashed race to the bottom mentality or you’ll never get a worthwhile pay rise.
You want the NHS to get as much as they can then you go back and say we’ll have some of that……not “that’s not fair we got nothing why should they get 3%”!!

Yes but like anyone knows, there is small debt and huge debt. Experian and transunion would agree. It is the scale that differs imho.

Good news, better than what the government proposed, at the time all the ministers where on message saying it was all that could be afforded, bit of a backlash and now they accept this proposal, just seems like part of the pattern.

I think it would be nice if frontline NHS staff were also offered a £1000 bonus in addition as recognition of their efforts, I'm sure captain Tom would have been happy to see some of his money raised used in that way.
Totally agree Corco65

The whole process has been a farce from the start, they put forward a 1% knowing when they receive backlash they will increase it to 3%, which was always their plan from the beginning, but its backfired

IMHO a 5% payrise should have been the minimum

I'm not saying they shouldn't get a pay rise whilst everyone else is frozen. Im saying that's fine but complaining that's its abhorrent and scandalous isn't a good look when others get nothing. There is a picture on sky news with a banner saying 15% or we strike... thats ridiculous when others get nothing.

Instead of saying 10% solely for NHS what would be wrong with say 5% and divvy the other 5% up across services who are frozen. They get he biggest slice of the pie and others get something.

The scale of Governement debt is increasing much faster than inflation. My guess is the UK Government will just create more new money, rather than increase taxes by much.

The 3% NHS offer will be what inflation will be soon. Its probably all we really can afford. I appreciate some of the frontline staff have worked very hard and under extra risk during Covid.

There was an interesting debate on Newsnight a couple of nights ago about how we should fund social care. In England and Wales at present quite a bit is self funded say by selling an old persons property and taking all their savings bar £23,250. The quality of social care for the elderly is deemed by experts to be quite low with a lot of front line staff on living wage, home visits quite short etc. Proposals are to make everyone pay National Insurance on their income till they stop working and/or increase national insurance by 1% for everyone. For the last 30 years no Governement has really done anything even though they all promised to do so.

No….. you ALL get 5%!!! Don’t knock people saying they want 15% because if that was me when people sneer “ You’ll never get that”, my reply would be “ Probably not…..but I bet I get far more than you”!!

Being a civil servant im just being realistic. I see your point but every payday i’ve seen rejected the by the unions is just implemented anyways

You’ve got to be prepared to go on strike and not worry about what anyone else says about you. The right wing press will slag you off anyway and anyone else whose happy for you to never get a pay rise as long as they’re alright…..who gives a f**k what they think anyway?

Whatever pay they get it's not enough.
But the cynical side of me knows this is to help justify the huge tax increases coming our way to pay for covid19.
I still don't care though.
I may not dead rich but at least I'm not rich dead and that's thanks to the NHS

Ad Infinitum, who pays the repayments read my post again. The rich will not keep paying more and more the burden hits the poor harder if they walk away. You keep borrowing yourself and see where it gets you.

I am not arguing for austerity ffs i am arguing for pragmatism
And that in a nutshell is why this country is always going to be run to benefit the Tories and their ilk.

They've managed to convince you that reality is something completely different to the framework they govern with.

When I borrow, I borrow from someone else and I owe them the money.

The government borrow from the Bank of England. The government own the BoE (in a simplistic but totally real sense). If I own the source of my debt can I truly be said to be in debt?

State debt does not work the same way as household debt.

The UK can create as much capital as it wants. To control the flow it needs to tax that money back out of the system.

The reason they can pretend that we have a huge unmanageable debt is becasue they allow the super-rich to hoard cash outside of the system. This means it never gets removed and therefore stays on the balance sheet. This isn't an inflationary trigger though while it remains external (simplified explanation but close enough).

To get to zero debt (assuming that was ever anyones aim) you'd have to tax every penny. To reduce debt you therefore need to tax enough pennies to get where you want to be. Taxing from the top down reduces the burden on the already struggling - in an ideal world it wouldn't even be up for debate.

Too many people have been hoodwinked by "it could be you".
It won't be.

Those who worked though Covid in the workplace putting themselves in danger - 6%
Those who worked from home and saw zero travel costs etc - 0%
