NHS pay rise 1%

I’m all in favour of a pay rise for the NHS amongst other areas who have gone above and beyond. How is it paid for though, people don’t want tax rises at this time. So let’s have some economics behind the headline - 1 per cent is not enough so pick a reasonable percentage rise and tell me how you would pay for it?

They haven’t got me anything. This government are a shambles, but I can see the bigger picture rather than just the sensational headlines pushed by the left wing media.
You lost me and most of the board with that comment Rico. You absoloutely fail to see the bigger picture, Serco get 37 billion and nurses get £3.70 a week.

That's easy FC, dont hand over anotehr penny to track and trace, there is 15 billion right there. Job done.

Oh and on the subject of tax rises, I have no problem with that, so you need to speak for yourself not me. What I would object to is paying more taxes for a ****ed up T & T

What makes this more galling is the pay rise teachers got last year, when nurses got nothing.

I am not sure if this is sarcasm or not, but please dont fall into the trap of "yeah, but whatabout..."

the NHS deserves a pay rise, just as Teachers, support workers and those on minimum wage deserve a pay rise. One is not dependent or related to the other.

old but as applicable now more than ever.

Did nurses get nothing I’m just reading about the subject and I saw this quote?
Why do you say they got nothing last year?

"Nurses have had a 12% increase in pay over the last three years, the average nurse's salary is around, £34,000 per annum,"

How about Amazon, BP, Vodafone, Starbucks etc start paying a fraction of the corporation Tax that they should be paying if they weren't able to exploit their very expensively lobbied tax loopholes and tax havens?

I would most certainly not have prioritised a pay rise for teachers at that point in time, especially when overlooking nurses.

Yes it would be great to give everyone par rises but someone is going to have to pay for it all....

And there we go, who is going to pay for it. I do get a bit fed up with this kind of comment. It's meaningless, particularly under the current regime.

A better idea, this is from 2020 and gives a nice picture of NHS staff wages from 2010 until 2019. From the Nuffield Trust.

Really? Everyone knows about Serco, and the Tory's giving contacts to their mates. I don't ever recall saying or posting on here that I thought that was a good thing.

Should NHS staff get a pay rise? Of course they should.

Should they get more than 1%? Yes, of course they should.

Have other public disciplines had a pay rise? No, and many deserve it just as much as NHS staff.

This country has been kept running by the selfess sacrifices by so many over the last year. To dismiss that and sensationalise the issue by highlighting only NHS staff is not seeing the bigger picture.

It's not up to you or I how it is paid for. That's just a lame cop out.

Here's one (simplistic) idea

Hi is that Jeff Bezos? I hear your company has made a huge profit in the UK during lockdown, you will be receiving a non-negotiable demand for £20billion windfall tax to help fund our NHS. Thank you.

(Yes, I'm aware that Mr. Bezos has stepped down)

We don't raise taxes to pay for things.

We raise taxes to manage inflation.

Also, the government have saved a fortune in less than inflationary rises across the NHS pay scale, so maybe they could use some of that?

That’s a great idea and I was a bit miffed with the budget that that loophole wasn’t closed. The amount of revenue the gvt could raise if they just got these companies to pay their fair share would be a start.

No I’m not saying it is up to you or I , but to give the NHS and others a pay rise that they would make a noticeable difference to their salary will cost a lot of money.

your idea is great by the way!

The bigger picture Rico, is we can afford it, absoloutely we can afford it. That was my point. You said you see the bigger picture, I don't think you do.

Yes teachers should get a rise, everyone who is living below or on the bread line should be given a pay increase, and do you know waht? We can afford that too, and we can afford it easily.

There is plenty of money sloshing around our economy, just not in the right places.

Perhaps we would have benefited from Corbyn’s magic money tree with the alternative regime.....

Someone has to pay

Maybe if the Government hadn't spunked up £22 billion ( or £37 billion depending on what you read) on a track and trace Windows 98 system ( which is more than than half of the entire Defence budget), there might be enough in the pot for a bit of both???

No one seemed to question where the £22bn came from or the estimated £100Billion plus that HS2 will cost, or the £200+ billion the Trident replacement will cost, but yes, we definitely cant afford a pay increase for the NHS.

Come on, we are better than this.

I am waiting for someone to suggest that the residents of the UK would get a much better health service for our £180 billion a year if it was all ran privately.
