Newcastle Arabia

Our sport has not been ruined by Saudi Arabia taking control at Newcastle.

It was ruined long before when Abramovich, the Glazers, Liverpool's owners (I forget the name of previous & current) etc started putting their money into clubs and all the TV deals around the world Sky sold their souls to.

I'm sure any reasonable Geordie would rather not have their club owned by any country let alone Saudi Arabia. How many times have you heard the response that the British govt buys oil from SA and sells weapons back to them?
We backed that too, let's not forget our roll in voting for it to happen.

After suffering years of others cheating via financial doping it must feel sweet to have your own sugar daddy.

It's like using a cheat code in a game or editing the database in football manager.

You can do it, the game doesn't stop you, but it takes all the reward and sense of achievement out of the game.
They aren’t cheating, they are well within FFP. plenty of other clubs have spent far more

I think using funds given to you by a regime like the Saudis is cheating. Their club is now morally bankrupt.

I guess we all have our own moral red lines. I am comfortable with mine and I would certainly stop supporting Boro if we were bought by Saudi Arabia or similar.

Not cheating exactly but will no doubt employ the 'creative accounting' of fellow billionaire clubs.
Lets use the word 'unfair' when the base of competitive sporting endeavor is the proverbial 'level playing field'
Watch out for Aramco being the next sponsor - I'd guess £50m a year for shirt sponsorship minimum to match the City Sheiks.

They aren't breaking any Premier League rules so they can't be charged with anything. They are no different now to how they are funded as are Man city.

But yes if MFC were bought out by such a country I certainly wouldn't be supporting them any longer.

Completely agree, it may be legal, but it's unethical.

But the real issue for me is why they bought Newcastle Utd. Its very clearly a case of sportswashing the appalling Saudi human rights record and every time anyone cheers a goal, watches a game, or even talks about their recent upsurge, then they are enabling that. Same as Abramovic at Chelsea, albeit to a lesser degree, its all about promoting the interests of the nation behind the cash.

Nothing like abramovich as love him or loathe him he isn’t a defacto ruler of a country with a murderous regime.

Newcastle isn’t owned buy a business man with a shady past it’s owned by the Saudi ruler out of his private wealth fund the same person who is bombing Yemen as we type.

I think Newcastle have missed a huge opportunity to stand up to a murderous regime.

They could have publicly embarrassed mohamed bin salman, boycotted games, massive public protests against his ownership.

Instead they wrap towels round their heads and clap along like compliant fools, happy to be thrown a few shiny baubles.

I just find it pathetic.

Lots of city fans dislike the fact that they are no longer a real football club, they are a fairground attraction, a sideshow. It will be the same for Newcastle.

Cheating to win gives an initial buzz, but like all unearned prizes, the buzz soon wears off.
When the money moves in and the pride of the seeing your local team improve against odds dissipates, the supporters become a captive audience to be rinsed. Good for a while, then what have you got left?

I agree, but Abramovich has well publicised links to Putin and the Russian state, he's not just a 'businessman', including significant involvement with the government.

Do you think he bought Chelsea out of his love of football? I don't.

True but he’s not putin that’s the difference

Newcastle are owned by the ruler not his shell businessmen

It’s not though, the PL allowed the takeover. Saudi Arabian money is everywhere in this country so no reason it shouldn’t be allowed for newcastle

Fair enough.

It's cheating in my view, I think majority of people see it that way from conversations I've had.

You are of course entitled to your opinion.

Cheating would mean they have broken the rules, they haven’t that’s just a fact regardless of if you agree

The source of money might be questionable but you could say the same about half of the premier league

I wouldn't call it cheating per se, it's just a sad indictment of the state of the game in this country now.

The geordies who fawn over the new ownership knock me sick tbh - and in my experience it seems to be most of them.

Cheating is acting dishonestly to gain an advantage.

One could definitely make an argument to say Newcastle are acting dishonestly by accepting funds from Saudi Arabia.

Anyway, I think we can all agree that the whole stinking mess is a stain on Newcastle and the PL.
