New Zealand weight lifter at the Olympics

My son was born female and transitioned to male.
I think you may be a bit confused about the pronouns used.
You talk about transitioning men not going into womens prisons for their safety. However you talk about using the toilets that you identify with, therefore transitioning men will enter female toilets.
The flip side is that they go into the sex at birth toilet, this then leads to the situation with my son (born girl) going into the ladies.
As neither case is ideal, open up the disabled toilets for them.
I think it comes down to appearance, if you look like you won't cause alarm or distress use a woman's toilet, as you say a disabled toilet might be the sensible option.

I always find it interesting how these debates always seen to revert back the use of toilets or changing rooms.

The problem is not the persons gender or sex it is about whether they might potentially be a sex offender or not, just because you have transitioned doesn't make you anymore likely to sexually assault someone then someone who hasn't. Similar to thinking that a gay person or Lesbian might always be seeking to take advantage of someone of the same sex, are heterosexuals always trying to do this?

If someone transitions so they they can take sexual advantage of someone else then that is pretty drastic and extreme and I've never heard about anyone who has done this.

If someone is pretending to identify as a different gender in order to abuse someone that is totally different to being trans and is beyond the trans community. Just like people who use the cover of anything else in order to take advantage of someone else, i.e. a teacher, celebrity, priest etc or someone who just pretends to be friendly or helpful in the first instance.

Very true, thank you for your wise words.

I agree it is often brought back to toilets and changing rooms, it is because where we need most privacy.

Also most people think that trans are always male to female, I hoped to explain the differences that female to male face.

It is sad that many think that being trans somehow makes you a sexual predator. I am sure that the vast majority seek to have as normal as relationship that they can find. However that is also another can of worms, that I wont open, as I really struggle with the terms and meanings in sexual identity.

Is true BD, in my experience I have found the trans people I have met are extremely brave and sincere in the quest to be who they feel they really are and I have had nothing but admiration for their struggle and determination to just be who they are.

It's a tough journey alright, with lots if mental hurdles to overcome, never mind the physical ones.

If a women identifies as a man and wants to use the male toilet looking like a woman she is taking a chance on being sexually assaulted.
That's a very low opinion of men & their uncontrollable urges that would mean a women was in danger of sexual assault just through being in mens toilets.

Do you really think that?

Kuinini ‘Nini’ Manumua, is the woman who was ultimately displaced by inclusion of Laurel Hubbard. She’s 21, and it would have been her first Olympics.

Of course there are male predators.
Of course their are male perpetrators of sexual violence and abuse against women and other men.

I think the consideration was regarding how much abuse specifically takes place in a toilet or changing room as opposed to anywhere else.

And also about about trying to challenge some people's automatic assumptions that someone who is trans is more likely to be a risk to others or that their purpose for transitioning is to take advantage of others.

There is potential for abuse regardless of percentage figures , and there are no assumptions, I was talking about trans people being at risk, not being a risk towards others..

What are you saying that makes trans people more at risk of sexual assault than someone else?

I wouldn’t get too concerned. The Chinese woman in her class of weight has lifted about 50 kilos more than anybody else in the world including this kiwi lifter and is a stonewall banker for gold.
It's a very good point and worth bearing in mind that we've had a crooked sports environment for quite some time with Athletes looking to get the inside track for almost anything-- China, the US et al are all extending the boundaries on how athletes can improved their performances. I'm not saying that all athletes go down that path but many do. This latest news on trans reminds me of so many women athletes in the past who took testosterone to enhance their attributes -- notably Mary Decker who lied until she was blue in the face that she didn't touch drugs but she was found to have high levels testosterone as well as other junk in her system. Then there's the whole situation with Balco as well as the US Olympic committee [allegedly] granting waivers to the likes of the Williams sisters [tennis] and Simone Biles. My point is no matter if we have trans athletes, or athletes just trying to get a cm advantage through inducing some sort of substance to alter your metabolic rates it's all [unfortunately] part of the sporting culture these days.
