New Years Honours List

Yes, it is that time of year again when all of us old duffers can whinge about who made the list and what have they really contributed to society.

I love to see people from the community who have put others before themselves make this list but then we have sports personalities and entertainers getting a gong, this is the part of it that riles me.

I get Brian May's contribution to music and his campaigning on animal welfare, David Harewood advocating for better mental health but Frank Skinner and the man on every channel Stephen Graham, what have the latter two really offered society?

Frank Skinner - contributions to entertainment. I can think of worse recipients of honours frankly. In that list there are countless honours for individuals who have made it to the top of their professions. No public service. MPs, professors, CEOs

And it all needs to stop. You could go through the list and put a stroke of a pen through the majority of them.

It should be made up of people who are working for the community/country and not for people doing their everyday job.

We've got our own Kammy, a lovely guy, but other than recently highlighting his illness and that of others, what's he really done to deserve a gong?

I have no time at all for this yearly farce. In fact it irritates me somewhat. It is anachronistic, and I am sure the rest of the world looks on and laughs at this. I know people who spend hours working their socks off, voluntarily, who do not get recognition, nor seek it. Why are they not selected?

It is so random, and quite sycophantic for some, and that's what makes it unfair. Actors, singers, etc etc getting nominated for simply doing their jobs. The elderly gentleman who was picking up litter voluntarily on a street in Guisborough in all weathers who I saw every morning going to work didn't get an award. Why not? some may ask what makes those working in the media more worthy?

Time to get rid of it once and for all. Rant over.

It is these people that should be selected, the men and women working in food banks, working with the homeless, giving their time up to offer clubs to young kids, the lads and lasses stood out in all weathers running sports clubs. These are the people who deserve it.

I take the dog over the Dock Park or drive down Normanby Rd and see the numerous coaches giving up their time to offer junior football to kids, they are more or less giving up their weekends (and some evenings) for the good of others.

You see the foodbank and homeless teams in the North East and they are all working to support others, to try and ease the burden that this Tory government put us all under, these are the people who deserve to be recognised.

The honours system is a total and utter load of bollox. These selfless people mentioned don't need a f*cking CBE/MBE pinned on them to change the truly great service they give to society.

And on a side note, I have far more respect for the ones who refuse the honours.👍

The honours system is total b***ks and a relic to a bygone era.

I seem to think the likes of David Bowie turned down the nonsense awards.
Yet on the other thread that I didn't want to scupper, you said that Kammy's accolade was well deserved. I think he's a great bloke but does he really deserve to be given an MBE?

Grayson Perry gets a knighthood. Great, but only if he goes to the Big House in his Claire persona. In one of his outrageous frocks
