Most boards have an automatic system like that. I guess to show who is new and who has been around a while - probably so you know who might be more trusted - not that life works like that. Your status will change when you reach certain milestones such as the number of posts and how many likes you have received. We had a thread a few weeks back which noted when some of the changes occur.
